CM Punk has revealed on Twitter that early this morning marked the first day of shooting for his WWE DVD.
The new DVD, which is bound to be produced on Blu-ray format too, is slated for release later this year in September and according to Punk himself he’s the one fully in charge.
One of his tweets today, shown below, might be hinting that he’s managed to get WWE to include Ring of Honor (ROH) footage on the set, whilst referencing other independent wrestling promotions CM Punk was a part of early on in his career.
Oh hey. Day 1 of filming for this little DVD thing I’m doing. No time like 5:30 AM to capture my true crabby essence.
Man. This DVD is going to be so great. #LWF #MAW #SDW #IWA #IWC #ROH #OVW #WWE
That’s Lunatic Wrestling Federation, Mid-American Wrestling, Steel Domain Wrestling, Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South, International Wrestling Cartel, Ring of Honor, Ohio Valley Wrestling, and World Wrestling Entertainment.
Of course, that doesn’t yet confirm WWE will be using footage from other promotions in the DVD in terms of matches or flashbacks, but it certainly means there will at least be discussion of them in the biography. All except TNA Wrestling that is, which Punk neglected to mention in today’s tweet.
Punk doesn’t want any mention of TNA … I don’t blame the guy.
ROH have always had a fairly good relationship with Vince actually, so I can imagine them loaning some footage out for at least one release, especially since it’s so vital to the story of a guy like Punk’s career. Vince will have paid them handsomely for it, anyway. Only problem is the DVD will probably end up getting deleted in a few years when Vince loses the rights to make money off it.
@Mark D
WWE was going to buy PWI???
I hope his dvd lives up to it… but I mean he is running the whole dvd… so? We’ll see! 😛
this sound exciting, i just hope the entire set lives up to its word.
I hope this is a good as we and he think it will be if so day one buy for me
I don’t think we’ll see any ROH footage on this set – possibly still photos from the PWI Archive (which WWE was in talks of buying a few years ago), OVW for sure as its WWE’s footage and possibly SDM (as I think that footage would be owned by Punk’s friend Ace Steele? Who himself will more than likley appear on the set along with Colt, Cliff Compton and Luke Gallows).
Looks like his match with eddie guerrero at IWA is going to be in this set
AWESOME! One of the things that pissed me off about the Rock DVD; there wasn’t any mention of his time in Memphis. Nice to see Punk remembering his roots.
Also cool, this will be the first big-time-nation-wide record of the post ECW US wrestling scene. …unless you count The Wrestler, I guess.
If there can only be one match from the Indy scene…which one would you prefer? My pick would be CM Punk vs Samoa Joe II.
I’m surprised by the mention of LWF he was only there a few months and as far as I know only 5 matches exist on tape.
There is WAY more than 5. I guess you really had to go to LWF shows in the 90s though to get them, or know Billy Whack and CM Venom.
Pretty sure it just means discussion.
There is one problem though and im sure its on WWEs end. Matches with Punk vs Guys in TNA now like Joe, Daniels, Aries. Im pretty sure they’d show clips from his feud with Steamboat and Foley and matches vs Danielson(only 1 sadly) and Raven
I could imagine the WWE paying Sinclair to use their footage for this release, SBG is just going to be interested in the money and extra promotion. I wouldn’t think there is going to be much footage but I could see clips or pictures being included in the documentary.
Thanks DB and Indyfan. I figured if WWE wants to do this they are going to need to begin the process
Before ROH was owned by Sinclair, im sure ROH would of allowed some footage of ROH in the set. Probably for some exposure. BUt now that they are owned by a big company, WWE will have to purchase footage and go through all the hoops. And that is even if they allow it. Don’t forget, ROH just released ROh : Summer of Punk 2 disc dvd set. And it’s selling well.
They would of course need permission SRB, by paying for the right to use the said footage.
Oh man this is going to be the greatest
I’m just curious if WWE can put it in there legally without purchasing any of it. Wouldnt they have to get ROH’s permission and do all of that legal paperwork? Same reason WWE/TNA are having issues of Flair at HOF this year? I know Flair/HOF is a little different since he is a TNA contracted wrestler showing up at a WWE event. But can WWE show ROH footage without ROH permission?
SRB: Basically what I was getting at was the tweet could mean he talks about all of his career background in the doc, or it could mean there’s actual flashback footage (or actual matches) from those promotions included on the DVD.
Perhaps it’s a combination of both. My guess is the first, which is still very good his time before WWE has coverage.
WWE could certainly put some footage in there, even if minimal.
Would love to see his IWA:MS work on here, over his ROH stuff. Punk really shined here for years, and put on amazing matches with tons of opponents.
“might be hinting that he’s managed to get WWE to include Ring of Honor (ROH) footage on the set” …… “that doesn’t yet confirm WWE will be using footage from other promotions in the DVD in terms of matches or flashbacks” I guess I’m confused as this seems conflicting to me.. either way, I really don’t see how WWE would be able to use ANY ROH footage at all and knowing Vince I’m sure he doesn’t want to, but Vince has surprised me in allowing Punk to come out to “Cult of Peronality.” So I guess anything is possible. I guess if Vince does use the footage that something will have to be worked out between WWE/ROH. I do not know the legal stuff of all that, but I dont think WWE can just go ahead and use another company’s footage that they did not purchase. And knowing Punk I’m sure he wants the DVD to have at least a few ROH matches and you really cant blame him. Interesting…
Well that is cool…used to follow Punk when he wrestled for IWA Mid-South. Some of his matches with Chris Hero were off the charts awesome.
