WWEDVDNews.com has some exclusive info to reveal on June’s WWE: The Biggest Matches in ECW History DVD and Blu-ray. So let’s get to it.
(Kindly link back to this article if you are using any portion of this news post on your own websites and blogs).
First up, the marketing tagline for the release reads “Sensational, Shocking and Over-The-Top!“. The set is to be billed as featuring never before released matches in ECW history (in part). As rumored, we can fully confirm the DVD will be hosted by “the voice” of ECW, Joey Styles.
As for why another ECW DVD is hitting stores, it’s all about the content being in fan demand. Whilst it’s been more than 5 years since the last ECW Home Video, WWE suggest that recent consumer research has proven a high demand for original ECW content, second only to WCW content.
Here’s a new, second synopsis for the release…
ECW started as a small, Philadelphia-based local wrestling company, but rapidly became a sensation that built a passionate fan base and influenced both WCW and WWE permanently.
Extreme Championship Wrestling was known for its intense matches, fan interaction, and introducing a number of future superstars to the general public, including Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Sandman, Taz, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, the Dudley Boyz, Rob Van Dam, Shane Douglas, and more.
Now for the first time in years, ECW returns to home entertainment with The Biggest Matches in ECW History. Hosted by the longtime unmistakable voice of ECW, Joey Styles, this home video release collects some of the most amazing and over-the-top matches in ECW history, some of which have never before been released on DVD.
Joey Styles confirmed the DVD to be in the works at WWE shortly following the reveal. Also via Twitter, he clarified that this release will include original ECW footage only.
WWE: The Biggest Matches in ECW History will be released within the US on June 5th, 2012. It’s available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray formats by clicking here.
Keep an eye on Silvervision.co.uk for UK/Europe’s release time and the content listing.
looking forward to this DVD set hopefully they will showcase some matches which arent on other superstars DVDs.
Theres a wealth of footage out there which is worthy of a dvd release
Dusty Rhodes vs Steve Corino in a cowbell match was a very good & brutal match
Sabu/Douglas/Funk from The Night The Line Was Crossed MUST be on here. Greatest triple threat match of all time, period.
There are SO many unreleased historic matches unreleased from ECW, here’s just a few:
Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert (Super Summer Sizzler, Texas Chain Match Massacre)
Public Enemy vs. Ian Rotten & Jason Knight (Ultra Clash, TPE’s debut)
Tommy Dreamer vs. Taz (Bloodfeast 93- both guys debut in the same match)
Sabu vs Shane Douglas (Bloodfeast, Sabu debut wins Title!)
Terry Funk vs Jimmy Snuka (TV Title Cage Match)
The Night the Line was Crossed
Sandman/Dreamer Singapore Cane Matches
The Malenko/Guerrero classics
Arn Anderson & Terry Funk vs Sabu & Bobby Eaton (When Worlds Collide)
Shane Douglas vs. Too Cold Scorpio (NWA Title Tourney Final)
Cactus vs Terry Funk (Hostile City Showdown – When the chairs fly into the ring!)
The Double Tables Match
Chris Jericho vs Sabu
RVD vs Jericho (a very early match in their ECW careers – never released by ECW, Big Apple Blizzard Bash)
Tazz vs Tommy Dreamer (when WWE superstar Tazz drops the ECW Title to Dreamer – CyberSlam 00)
That was just a quick list, if I thought about it I could list more!
ECW Blu = Already Pre-ordered!!!
I’m surprised WWE added Shane Douglas’ name on it especially with the bad blood they have with one another.
ECW is great, but it was never meant to look all shiney in HD. It was meant to look bad in a gritty hardcore don’t care type way. Putting the old footage on blu ray is a bit like polishing a turd.
@ RabidHeat
Lot of matches from the early years such as the “The Night the Line was Crossed” match with Terry Funk vs. Sabu vs. Shane Douglas. Surprisingly that match is yet to be released by WWE. Right now the only DVD to have it is the RF Video release of the event.
Problem is, haven’t most of the truly definitive, most famous ECW BEEN released on WWE DVD already? I’m talking the cream of the crop here, lol. This kinda has an air of “all the ECW matches that aren’t the best, but at least we ain’t released them yet” about it. Like the new Cage Matches DVD. 🙁
Very much looking forward to this and the WCW Blu Ray. A lot of good things to look forward to on HD Blu Ray
I’m really excited for this release and the WCW Clash of the Champions DVD’s. I’m especially excited for them because it is the first time ECW, WCW will be in HD on bluray. Can’t wait.
