WWE 'Randy Savage Unreleased' DVD - Logo

This time last month WrestlingDVDNetwork.com had the scoop that WWE gave the official go-ahead to a new Randy Savage DVD and scheduled it for May 2018:

Exclusive: WWE Producing “Unreleased” Macho Man Randy Savage DVD for 2018 – Name & Release Date

And this Macho Man DVD comes with a twist because, off the back of the success of the “WWE UNRELEASED 1986-1995” DVD collection last year, the entirety of its content will be made up of never-before-seen and never-before-released matches unearthed for the first time!

Given the returning theme some expected Sean Mooney to return as host and if that included you, you were exactly right! The former WWE announcer will be involved with the next installment in the series and he’s bringing a few friends along with him.

WWE - Sean Mooney, DDP, Corey Graves & Bayley Hosting 'Randy Savage Unreleased' DVD

“Randy Savage Unreleased: The Unseen Matches of the Macho Man” will feature Sean Mooney, Diamond Dallas Page, Bayley and Corey Graves in a sit-down discussion of the Macho Man’s career. Early indications are that this could either be presented as the main feature of the DVD or, more likely, act as host segments introducing some of the chosen matches.

Diamond Dallas Page confirmed that this sit-down was indeed shot for the purpose of the new DVD and has commented on the experience via his Twitter account, shown below. PWInsider.com reports that WWE brought in DDP (and presumably Sean Mooney) to the site of this week’s RAW in Phoenix, Arizona to film interview content for this and several other upcoming WWE projects.

You may have spotted some initial logo artwork for “Randy Savage Unreleased” shown above which can also be found here on Amazon.co.uk where fans in the United Kingdom can already pre-order the DVD for May. The full match listing for the new Hardy Boyz DVD (another May release) was unveiled earlier this week so the same for the Macho Man set is on the way very soon!

For those asking about the status of WWE’s “Double Feature” PPV packs, while details are still scarce we can confirm that the scheduled “Double Feature: Elimination Chamber & Fastlane 2018” DVD is going ahead as planned.

That’s because those events will still be independent as RAW and SmackDown exclusives, however following WrestleMania all PPVs will now be dual-branded and feature stars from both shows.

As far as the PPV DVD releases go the move appears to negate the need for the double packs since there will now be a reduced number of PPV events in a year and it could even make the 2-disc DVD sets an impossibility if all PPVs are now to be 4 hours in length. The premise of the double packs after all was to present one RAW-branded PPV with one SmackDown-branded PPV.

I agree more like the Hogan set. On Bret’s unreleased dvd the first disc was good but then had too many repeat opponents. Hogan faced off the likes of kamala, one man gang, rick rude, and hell even killer khan. It was a nice balance of already seen opponents and the heels of the day. That’s what I hope savages set will have. No Hogan, warrior, or andre matches please. Commentary would be nice like they did for Hogan’s set.

  2. MachoFan says:

I really like the Unreleased theme, but I’d hope it would follow the Hulk Hogan Unreleased formula as opposed to the Unreleased 1986-1995 set from last year. Give us balance or they’ll run the risk of burning out the concept and potential matches for other releases. Furthermore, some of that 86-95 set was lackluster and, worse yet, the video quality on some of the matches from DVDs 1 and 2 was tough to watch.

I liked the Hogan Unreleased approach because it gave a few totally unreleased matches along with other classics never before released to DVD. Macho Man could easily follow the same formula. Put a totally new dark match versus Steamboat, Flair and Undertaker, then fill out the rest with unreleased to DVD matches like:

    1st DVD
    9/28/85 Philadelphia vs. Hulk Hogan
    3/07/86 Philadelphia vs. Tito Santana
    5/24/86 Boston vs. Hulk Hogan

    6/28/86 Philadelphia vs. Paul Orndorff
    7/27/86 Toronto vs. Ricky Steamboat

    2/14/87 Philadelphia vs. Ricky Steamboat
    5/15/87 Houston vs. Ricky Steamboat
1/09/88 Philadelphia vs. Honky Tonk Man (Cage)

    2nd DVD
    7/30/88 WrestleFest vs. Ted Dibiase

    • Anan says:

Not that I’m against that set of matches bc it’s a hell of an awesome list. But if any of those listed matches have been seen I don’t think they’ll be on the set bc it’s advertised to be “never before seen or released” i know companies of any kind don’t always follow up with their advertising however that just makes the people think about not buying from them out of disappointment/frustration/anger which is bad for business.

Love your Unreleased Collection list. Personally would love Kane to get one too. Though vastly underrated and underused (even Austin and HHH agreed he’s underrated when playing Word Association on the Steve Austin Show when HHH was a guest which aired on the Network), the legend is still a future HOFer, a veteran and not only has been but still is an asset to the company when needed. Also feel Jericho, Edge, Kurt Angle, Hardyz (much later since they’re getting an upcoming set released), Cena, Warrior, Rock, Ted Dibiase (hasn’t had a set on him at all far as I know), Jake Roberts, in addition to maybe perhaps others should get an Unreleased set on them too. Since HBK is expected to get one, I believe it’s only a matter of time before HHH does too.

The names I mentioned deserve an Unreleased set on them as do your aforementioned names, Taker, Sting, Austin, 4 Horsemen, Flair.

    • whut says:

sidenote: that SummerSlam Spectacular match is on the third Warrior set.

  3. whut says:

I am VERY VERY excited for this! Randy Savage is my all time favorite and I can’t wait to see matches of his that are (likely) completely new to me.

  4. Ricardo Aguilera says:

Can wait for it I have both others Randy Savage dvds that came up already in the past I love that the matches are going to be unreleased because that means that the matches have never been seen or been released that’s what wwe should start doing with DVDs ohhhh yeahhh dig it

    • RabidHeat says:

The only problem is, are ANY of these matches going to be any better or even as good as all of his matches recorded for TV and PPV that are already out there? People want “Unreleased” everything, but is the match quality of any of it any good, when no wrestler goes full throttle in the ring for safe house show / dark matches? People seem to think that “Unreleased” is automatically better, but how often will you re-watch this set?

Not to mention the inevitable lack of commentary on most if not all of the matches, but that’s another issue.

      • Wrestlevessel says:

Unreleased is a huge selling point for me. If I have matches on the DVD already or have seen them no point. Savage vs Undertaker would be a huge selling point for me. 2017 was a weak year of WWE DVD releases with the Unreleased 1986-1995 being the only set I bought. And that has to be the greatest DVD ever. I like rare things never seen before.

        • RabidHeat says:

Okay, but what are your thoughts on my point about the match quality and re-watch value?

          • Anan says:

Can I chime in on this? I agree that (most of the time) TV/PPV matches are better. It’s why they’re recorded for those purposes and why people pay to see them as they originally air and to rewatch on The Network or dvd/bluray. Live event/house shows, dark matches/segments are done, while at times to send fans home happy, the main purpose is to test the matches out to see how well they get over. If good enough they’ll carry over to tv and maybe ppv as a future rivalry, feud, whatever. If not good enough then that’s the end of that unless something happens that may trigger it returning regardless.

But Unreleased are rare gems. Sometimes the tv/ppv matches aren’t as good as those who watch expect. For them, no replay value on those. Sometimes the Unreleased content may contain stuff that turns out to be better.

There were some live event/house show or tour bouts – Taker/Bret vs Diesel/HBK, Bret vs Austin, Sun Bowl 96, Taker vs Big Show, France 2008, Taker vs Jericho, MSG between 2008-2010 – that were just as good or better than the tv/ppv bouts. Taker/Bret vs HBK/Diesel, pretty much a WM12 preview, solidified Diesel’s heel turn. IMO Bret vs HBK was always delivered (maybe the only exception was SSeries 97 depending on who’s asked), Taker vs Diesel was a good big man match. But I enjoyed the actual match portions of this tag match. Bret vs Austin, can’t remember them ever having a bad match w/each other. Taker’s aforementioned matches with Show & Jericho were praised by fans. Jericho tweeted praise for his match w/Taker.

I personally desire to see the 2 Taker matches but don’t know if they’ll be released. No idea if any of these were televised or recorded but considering the Sun Bowl 96 match was released on Austin’s Bottom Line set, must have been televised or recorded or both.

Commentary….i feel all matches released through whatever means whether that’s The Network or home media should have the option to turn on/off commentary so everyone’s happy – those who want it will have it, those that don’t can turn it off. If commentary wasn’t done originally for the match/event, it can be done prior to being released so this option can be implemented for those matches. Sometimes I love commentary. JR & King, great commentary team. Sometimes though I find it a bit distracting so wish I can turn it off.

All the above is just my thoughts/honest & humble opinions.

        • Anan says:

Totally agree w/you on your points regarding Unreleased content!!!

  5. Jerry Heinz says:

Corey Graves and Bayley on the Macho Man dvd set ruins it for me. I’m gonna pass on it

    • whut says:

if I’m not mistaken Bailey has mentioned that Randy Savage is her favorite wrestler.

that’s why I feel it makes sense to have her included (I mean, if you have an active worker on the roster who is outspoken about that, why not utilize her/him that way?)

    • RabidHeat says:

Lol, you’re gonna pass on it just because of the interview segments and miss out on matches which your are presumably otherwise interested in?

  6. Nick says:

I wonder if we see some Memphis footage, not sure if WWE can use it. Also hoping for some Tito matches.

  7. RCS1988 says:

Randy Savage vs. Undertaker is almost a given for the set.

    • Anan says:

Hope so though they could save that if they ever released an Undertaker Unreleased set. I def want the match released. However in that era bc of his gimmick Taker couldn’t work that much in the ring from a wrestling standpoint. Randy’s had great matches, some of which I’m guessing haven’t been released w/Flair, Jake Roberts, Tito Santana, Steamboat, Sting & DDP maybe, and maybe Bret and/or Owen Hart too. Not saying the Taker match shouldn’t be here though.

  8. RelaxingGhost says:

    Cant wait to get this

  9. Anan says:

This isn’t a complaint, more like trying to understand….Mooney I guess I can see why he’s on host part of the set, DDP makes sense bc he stated that Randy made him in WCW or something like that, Bayley idk, Graves I would’ve replaced with Lanny Poffo and either or both Jake Roberts and Ricky Steamboat as both were some of his best WWF rivalries, maybe either or both Jimmy Hart and Ted Dibiase. Maybe being the key word.

Cannot wait for the content listing and this set to be released. Just wish he and Vince were on good enough terms and this set was done while he was still alive so he could be a part of the project. I also wish before he died, the whole Poffo fam was HOF’ed by WWE per Randy’s request as that may have improved Randy’s relationship w/Vince.

    • LP1 says:

Bayley was a huge Savage fan growing up and still is. Her outfits most of the time are based on old outfit designs he wore. Not to mention her using the flying elbow in tribute to him. If you follow her on social media she has a big collection in her home of Savage figures, DVDs, shirts, Pop vinyls, etc. Makes sense to have her on there to represent the viewpoint of a current wrestler who was heavily influenced by him.

      • Anan says:

Didn’t say she shouldn’t be there. Just didn’t understand why she was but you helped me to understand so thanks. I didn’t know about her Macho Man fandom and such like collections since I don’t have any social media accounts. No time for them. I don’t watch wrestling much anymore so didn’t see enough of her to know her outfits were inspired or whatever by Randy.

But even so, having too many people in one interview panel will “clutter it up” I’d have been fine w/Bayley popping up every now & then bc of your points but would have preferred the panel consist of storytellers and she wasn’t in the business when he was active. That’s why I said I would’ve replaced Graves w/Lanny & Jake Roberts. They can tell stories Graves & Bayley cannot but at least Bayley is a huge fan of his. Idk if Graves is though I enjoy his commentary so his talking skills are evident enough to I guess warrant him to be here.

  10. Jammer says:

People complaining about a third Randy Savage DVD release?!?! Ha ha ha ha!!! What do you people want?!?! You collect wrestling DVDs but complain when a wrestling DVD comes out?? *sigh* Whatever.

    • RabidHeat says:

What do you mean “people”? At this very moment, only ONE person has complained on this thread (Howard). Get it right, pal.

      • Jammer says:

It’s not even just the Randy Savage DVD though. It seems that every time a DVD comes on here, people complain about repeats of matches. But what do they expect?? It is gonna happen on certain DVD releases. It just seems that more people are pissing and moaning over these DVD releases now than actually enjoying them.

        • RabidHeat says:

They have every right to offer their critique on choices. Without that, this site would consist of nothing but comments to the effect of: “Hey, great DVD!” What’s the point in that?

          • SRB says:

I’m gonna agree with both of you actually.

Offering a critique on choices is certainly valid. I was critical on the Shane DVD and frankly, am glad it got cancelled. Other than that, we know it’s impossible to please everyone or even the majority. Maybe the Shane DVD wasn’t aimed at a fan like me, but that unreleased Savage set certainly is.

That being said, people seem to forget this is and always has been a DVD group and then when WWE continues providing DVDs, people get pretty upset that they aren’t tailored to their specific needs. Watch WWE discontinue DVDs one day and then you’ll really see people go nuts. I’m actually glad we still get anything at all considering the financial losses LP1 pointed out in another post.

        • whut says:

although to be fair, it doesn’t seem like anyway has complained about “repeats” for this at all.

(obviously, because for an “Unreleased” set, that complaint would make no sense. it seems pretty likely that none of the content on it has been released before)

  11. Howard says:

How many Randy Savage dvd’s do we need? Same thing with the Hardy’s. So many other great superstars past and present, it’s time to start honoring them.

    • SRB says:

Isn’t this just the second Macho Man set?

    • RabidHeat says:

Are you one of those kinda people who’s still hoping for a 3 disc set on Tatanka? Lol.

      • whut says:

nothing wrong with that though. I mean, while it’s not likely for something like that to ever be realized, I can absolutely understand people wishing for releases that cover their favorites.

(personally I’d love a second “Greatest Stars of the 80’s” set – which of course is also unlikely to happen, this time covering guys that haven’t had a short bio on the first one, like Ted DiBiase)

        • Anan says:

Maybe not a popular statement but don’t care so no problem saying I wouldn’t mind a Tatanka set.

As for documentaries….Ted Dibiase, Goldust, Kurt Angle, Booker T and if The Rock didn’t have one yet, then he too all deserve a career spanning documentary that covers their career from start to present like Bret Hart’s 2005 dvd doc and Stone Cold’s Bottom Line doc. Those docs covered pretty much their entire careers. Goldberg especially now with his upcoming HOF induction deserves one as well. Sting should get one. Into The Light wasn’t really a career spanning documentary. It was more like a behind the scenes look prior to his WWE debut and/or his WM31 match from what I remember of it. That would’ve been a fine extra feature for a real career spanning documentary set.

I’m more than hoping the aforementioned names will get a career documentary set along with Kane and Undertaker. Taker’s 1 of or the most requested documentaries I can remember. Yeah he’s private but I don’t think he’ll mind a documentary on his career as he and others have spoken on it before in various bits & pieces over the years. Considering how much it is wanted it’ll sell well and therefore be great for business. Probably around or after his HOF induction which IMHO is the best time for it.

  12. RabidHeat says:

“the entirety of its content will be made up of never-before-seen and never-before-released matches unearthed for the first time!”

I’m trying to work out if that means a mixture, with some “unseen” and others just “unreleased” (on DVD) or whether they are all “unseen” i.e. are there likely to be any old Coliseum Video matches in there?

    • Anan says:

In my mind, being on Coliseum Video means it has been released.

I’m thinking this will be perhaps like the Attitude Era Vol.3 which consisted of dark matches as well as live event house show matches which prior to being on that set hadn’t been released before. Randy Savage has been an active wrestler long enough to have more than enough dark and live event matches that it’d need more than one Unreleased set to release them all. With that said I surely wouldn’t mind if Coliseum Video content was released. I know they’re on the network but not everyone has it and prefer dvd/bluray instead which is totally acceptable. To each their own right??

I’m hoping this set will have dark matches, live event matches especially from MSG, UK, Boston Garden. His matches with Flar, Steamboat, Roberts, Dibiase, DDP, Sting if any are currently unreleased along with his match from 91 vs Taker and 92 where he teamed with Taker vs Flair & Berzerker should be on the set unless they’re saving them for an Unreleased set on Taker.

      • meme says:

Those were only released on VHS. It’s not like anyone still has a VCR hooked up.

      • RabidHeat says:

But then the ECW ‘Unreleased’ DVD sets contained matches that had previously been released on DVD and VHS, albeit not by WWE. The Hogan ‘Unreleased’ set contained some matches that were released on VHS, but not DVD.

        • whut says:

yep, the home video department has used different concepts of what “unreleased” means over the years.

(“never ever on WWE dvd” to “never been broadcast anywhere”. I assume considering the success of last year’s “Unreleased” set and the fact that even the most important houseshow matches of Savage have been released before, they will probably go with the “never been seen anywhere before” route)

      • RabidHeat says:

I have to ‘lol’ at that, by the way – how frustrated must Ric Flair have been when he was told he was teaming with The Berzerker?

        • Anan says:

Oh yeah he must’ve been real frustrated. No doubt about that. But let me ask how frustrated must Taker have been, especially at that point when he was young, peaking if not already in the peak of his career, to be feuding with Berzerker? And while I’m at it, Kamala & Giant Gonzalez? It’s not that they weren’t great in ring workers. Well except GG bc of his huge Khali like size. Berzerker/John Nord idk his in ring quality outside the Berzerker gimmick. I read that Jim/James Harris was a great worker who was held back by a gimmick (the Kamala gimmick.)

      • whut says:

“live event matches especially from MSG, UK, Boston Garden.”

of course, depending on the definition, those aren’t “unreleased” as well (because a lot of these shows were broadcast in some capacity).

        • Anan says:

True. Many of these events aired or shown in some way. But then again, some were not. Therefore as u stated “of course, depending on the definition” these were/still are unreleased and it is specifically these MSG, UK, Boston Garden, and elsewhere shows that I was speaking of in my previous comment. Sorry for not stating that in my previous comment.
Also “depending on the definition” just bc they were broadcast in some way doesn’t mean they were released as “unreleased” could also mean it hasn’t been released on any dvd/bluray set. Just pointing that out to deeper specifify your “depending on the definition” point which I definitely agree with.
