Brett Mix’s- ECW “Barely Legal 1997” Review:
?
“Funk Wins!!!! Do yooooou believe in Miracles!!!!” –Joey Styles
?
?
?
-ECW Barely Legal 1997 took place on April 13th, 1997 from the ECW Arena in Philadelphia in front of 1,770 fans.
-This is the first official ECW PPV event.
?
-An electric power transformer blew out moments after the show went off the air due to all the power being used by the building. It is said that had the show gone on even 10 seconds longer, they would have lost the feed.
?
-Getting the pay-per-view on in the first place was a struggle. Viewer’s Choice (now named In Demand) was very hesitant at putting ECW on pay-per-view because they felt that ECW was too vulgar and brutal, and refused to air the show without restrictions on the content. Paul Heyman claimed that this was a double standard because (UFC) was being criticized for its violent content at the time, but it was still getting pay-per-view time. Request TV agreed to give ECW a pay-per-view under the condition that it aired at 9:00 p.m. rather than the 7:00 p.m. time slot that pay-per-views usually held during that time frame.
?
-Barely Legal was released as part of a two-disc set with One Night Stand 2006 on July 11, 2006. It had previously been released in 2000 by Pioneer Entertainment as part of its “The Best of ECW” line of DVDs. The Pioneer release trimmed out many of the ring entrances, removed the music on the entrances not edited out (with the exception of songs ECW owned the rights to, including changing “Enter Sandman” from the Metallica version to Motorhead’ s cover), and edited out the backstage promos and part of Shane Douglas’s promo in the ring. The release included with One Night Stand’s DVD censored offensive language (used by the performers when they would cut promos, not used for the fans’ chants) and changed the majority of the entrance music to music produced by WWE to avoid licensing fees.
?
-The film Beyond the Mat covered this event in great detail.
-In a dark match before the event Louie Spicolli defeated Balls Mahoney
-In a dark match before the event Dark J.T. Smith and Chris Chetti defeated The F.B.I. (Little Guido and Tommy Rich)
?
?
?
-Joey Styles did commentary.
?
?
?
?
-Now onto the PPV……………
?
?
?
Philly chants EC Dub at the top of their lungs while Joey Styles welcomes everyone to the first PPV of ECW and you can barely hear him on the mic.
?
The Dudleyz, the tag champions come to the ring and are treated to Dudleyz Suck chants.
?
F**k you D-Von is chanted. D-Von tells the fans to shut the hell up. D-Von looking much more fit these days, and he says it is time to Testify.
Now we get the opening video package.
.Here we go!
?
?
?
1) Opening Contest- The Dudley Boyz (c) (Bubba-Ray and D-Von Dudley) with (Sign Guy Dudley and Joel Gertner) vs The Eliminators (John Kronus and Pretty Saturn) for the ECW Tag Team Championship
?
The Dudleyz were the top team in ECW and had their hands full here. So here we go!
?
Bubba-Ray Dudley and D-Von were not ready as the Eliminators came into the ring and attacked.
Bubba-Ray Dudley got back into the action with a Bubba Bomb and a cuss. D-Von with a diving headbutt. Irishwhip into a splash. Both teams wrestling inside the ring, neither going for a tag as both guys worked over the other at the same time. Bubba slapped Kronus and D-Von finished the vertical suplex to Kronus set up by Bubba-Ray Dudley off the top rope slamming him into the mat. Nearfall.
Saturn counters off the ropes and hits the Dudleyz with a double dropkick until Bubba-Ray Dudley hit a Bubba Slam on Saturn putting their momentum down momentarily. The Dudley deathdrop was set up but an inziguri from Kronus then Saturn to the Dudleyz stops that.
A double thrust kick by the Eliminators to the Dudleyz. Saturn and Kronus both go to the topp and twist in mid-air and drop on the Champs.
EC DUB chanted over and over.
Eliminators pose as the challengers are in control. The Eliminators made Saturn do a Saturn-Sault to the floor onto both Dudleyz. Kronus with a space flying Kronus drop putting his 265 pounds down on the Dudleyz over the top rope.
Styles says he does not believe anyone of that size can launch over the ropes. Undertaker can and he weighs more, but I am not so sure he could do it in moonsault fashion.
Saturn drops the elbow from the Stratusphere and now the Dudleyz stopped in mid-ring and Saturn tripped up Bubba-Ray Dudley.
The Eliminators in complete control. A big slam by Kronus to D-Von. Fans chanting for Saturn. Kronus up top hits a big time moonsault, a 450 splash. Fans love it absolutely! Eliminators get Bubba down and they trip him up after a kick to both sides, they cover the Dudleyz and we got new Champions. Everyone marks out as does Styles from the booth.
So in the end at 6:11 the Eliminators became the NEW ECW Tag Team Champions.
This opener was done very well. Never a dull moment and tons of high risk moves.
Excellent opener.
All of the sudden they said that the Dudleyz were still the champs because they scored a 86-83 vote total. The Eliminators still take the belts.

2) Rob Van Dam vs Lance Storm
?
?
Due to Chris Candido could not compete he has the match off and gets on the mic. Candido said he was hurt and been ECW since day one. He said he is going to keep an eye on things.
Storm comes out with the pony tail.
Rob Van Dam comes out and is recieved by a lot of cheers.
Styles says to keep your eyes on Van Dam.
Both guys tie-up, wait-lock by Rob Van Dam and then Storm backs him into the corner, a clean break. Another tie-up and Storm back in the corner.
No clean break this time, a forearm by Van Dam, and Storm out of the corner has a side headlock and then a monkey flip followed by a kick-up lands Rob Van Dam into a clothesline by Storm.
Over-head wristlock to Storm and then he launches himself off the middle rope onto Storm tossing him out of the ring. Air Van Dam as he used the top rope to launch himself onto Storm. Cat-like agility by Van Dam and he lands on Storm from the top corner upside down. Great agility by Storm to come off the top and apply a back elbow.
Now Rob Van Dam hits a moonsault onto Storm on the floor off the steel barricade.
RVD grabs a chair and now Storm sits in the corner. Rob Van Dam looks around and proceeds to kick Storm into the corner irishwhip him to the buckle then send the chair right into his face.
Styles says not that is extreme.
Rob Van Dam points his thumbs to himself and Storm dazed in the corner. RVD then dropkicked the chair into the face of Storm. Rob Van Dam putting on a clinic here.
A double underhook and then a powerbomb by Rob Van Dam to Storm. RVD to the top hits the frog splash.
Storm kicks out of what would eventually be the finishing move for RVD in WWE. RVD grabs the chair again and throws it at the head of Storm. RVD sent storm to the buckle and takes his time to hit a rolling thunder, missed the summersault splash and Storm back suplexed him onto the chair.
Storm has a shot now!
Lance Storm off the ropes ducks a spinning heel kick and connects with one on Van Dam. Storm sends RVD to the buckle and a cart-wheel splash to RVD. Storm off the top with a crossbody and a two count.
Styles says it is anyones match-up now! Rob Van Dam irishwhipped and a single leg-takedown.
?
Storm applied the Boston Crab to Rob Van Dam.
Lance Storm with beautiful execution and now to a single leg as he reaches back but Rob Van Dam got to the bottom rope to break the hold.
Off the ropes RVD holds on and sends Storm onto the apron. RVD swings Storm in the ring and a single leg-sling shot leg drop to Storm leaping over the top rope.
Both men refusing to loose. Storm hit RVD in the head with a chair and then tigerbombed Rob Van Dam on the steel chair. Rob Van Dam went face first into a chair off the top missing a leg-drop.
A waist-lock by Rob Van Dam then a standing switch by Storm after an elbow, RVD comes back with one of his own and then slingshots RVD into Storm with an elbow shot.
The first YOU FU**ED UP Chant of the night, which was barely a botch in a excellent match.
A german suplex with a bridge by Storm but only a two still. Storm hits RVD with a chair to the eyes. Fans boos he does it again. Storm hesitates and RVD kicks him with a spinning heel kick into the Van Daminator into the chair into the face of Storm.
A back flip by Van Dam now.
In the end at 10:10 RVD got the three count to the delight of the crowd.
This match like the last one was paced pretty perfectly.
It definitely was non-stop entertainment clocking in at just over ten minutes.
YOU SOLD OUT is being chanted and RVD gets on the mic and says he is not a suck up essentially.
RVD shoots about how he deserves to be on the PPV more then anybody and he just may of been the biggest ECW star ever.
Awesome match.

3) The Great Sasuke, Gran Hamada, and Masato Yakushiji vs bWo Japan (Taka Michinoku, Terry Boy, and Dick Togo) in a Six Man Tag
?
?
?
Masato Yakushiji replaced an injured Gran Naniwa.
Styles says that he is going to be breathless by the time this one is over.
Lucha Libre mixed with the Japanese Style. All signs point to a classic six man tag here which will have a ton of face paced moved. I will point out relevant moves as it may be impossible to keep up with this style of match, especially since it is tag team to boot.
?
The match starts off with Taka Michinoku and Hamada who execute moves extremely quickli. Masato comes in and takes it to Taka with a slam and a leg-drop. The Great Sasuke who is one of the best ever in the ring takes it to Taka with a suplex attempt but Taka hits a double axe-handle to The Great Sasuke. He tags out and the bWo of Japan hit a moonsault.
Back to The Great Sasuke and Taka double-teaming with Togo a dropkick after a camel clutch.
The Great Sasuke battled Liger at the Tokoyo Dome the night before this for the triple crown championship. I wish I could of seen that match. Two of the greatest ever.
Taka would end up going to the WWF after this and now Terry Boy comes in and he gives Masato all he can handle holding him in the air and dropping him with a 7 second corkscrew vertical suplex but Masato kicked out. Togo comes in and takes it to Yakushiji and and now he slams him stomach first against the canvas after a lot of power to slam him down. Dick Togo cant slam him and Masato hits a hurricanrana and then a spinning arm-drag, Taka comes in and then Masato counters into an arm-drag. Terry Boy and Hamada come in and both exchange chops.
Tamada with a headbutt and then an armbar takedown by Terry Boy.
Sasuka rides Taka as both are back tagged in and he leans back holding his chin in a reverse chinlock.
Amazing sequence by Sasuke taking it to the Japanese bWo. Taka and the bWo continue to take it to the other guys, this time Masato in the corner.
You can see the Lucha Libre blended in with Japanese style. A head-scissors on the concrete floor.
Do not blink here, any counter, any big move, it all happens and best of all the fans appreciate it. Check out Royal Rumble 1997, the fans in San Antonio did not care for any of their great work.
This is the difference.
Taka gets out of a single-crab by Sasuke and now Taka sends Sasuke face-first into the buckle and now a flying forerarm in the opposite corner, round-house right. Terry Boy and Dick Togo in the ring and Sasuke is still being worked over, a baseball slide by Taka to Sasuke.
Sasuke vertical suplexed his man to the mat. It was not too long before Sasuke had his ddt countered into a hiptoss by Togo.
Brain Buster by Taka and now Terry Boy with a bootto the face and Togo catapolted by the bWo.
Somehow he still kicks out.
So many counters, and high-risk moves, springboard dropkick from the top!
The resilience and athleticism in this match is past amazing.
A tornado ddt by Terry Boy followed by a powerbomb but it was broken up. Another hard scoop slam and another kick out. A leaping, swinging, tornado ddt but Dick Togo kicks out by Hamada.
Togo went for a senton but got caught by Sasuke, Tamada got a hurricanrana from the top turnbuckle but could not get the pinfall. Sasuke does damager with the chair on the outside. A springboard-suicide dive through the middle ropes. Sasuke is belly to bellyd overhead suplex by Taka and a dropkick to the back of the neck. Taka signals for the end as he plants him with the Michinoku Driver but his teammate made the save.
Sasuke catches Taka in the air with a dropkick and a moonsault press off the ropes, Taka kicks out.
Sasuke with a huge powerbomb with authority. A suplex with a bridge now and he got him.
In the end at 16:55 Team Sasuke got the win.
This match is beyond brilliant. Some of the fastest action you will ever see with no botching.
Classic stuff.

4) Shane Douglas (c) (with Francine) vs Pitbull #2 for the ECW TV Title
?
?
Douglas cuts a good promo before the match.
The match starts off with Shane Douglas and Pitbull #2 who are both rather underrated in the ring mixing it back and forth with some violent brawling.
Styles elludes to the fact that both men can work on the mat as well.
Pitbull #2 chokes out Shane Douglas on the middle rope and Francine looks to be crying. Gary-Pitbull #1 looking on with a broken neck from ringside.
Fans chanting for Pitbull #2 to break his neck.
Powerbomb countered with a hurricanrana. Piledriver by Shane Douglas to Pitbull 2. Another one, then another one trying to break the neck that seems to be the focus. A vertical suplex followed by a camel clutch then Pitbull got some adrenaline going and smashed Douglas through a table as the two battle on the outside.
A gaurdrail is brought into the ring and Shane Douglas drops him knee-first on the steel!
Douglas slides him below the rope and drops the steel across the back of his head. Shane Douglas is not finished yet says Styles.
Pitbull is taking everything Shane Douglas is throwing at him and shaking it off!
Pitbull has no chance he is being shoved off the top but out of no where he dropkicks Shane Douglas.
Pitbull #2 with some power moves and now Shane Douglas has something in his fist and hits an uppercut twice. Douglas with knucks and a piece of table over the head and a kickout by Pitbull 2. Douglas with a chair now smacks Pitbull two and gets a two. Now the time keepers bell and still a kickout.
Styles screaming NOOOO each time he kicks out is like hearing a grown man getting his testicles chopped off.
Pitbull #2 up and pissed apparently and irishwhips bim both ways. Douglas uses the title over and over to drop Pitbull 2. Douglas goes into the bboot but from behind a pumphandle slam by Pitbull 2 and a kickout.
Back and forth nearing the climax here.
Pitbull 2 got the chain from the boot of the Franchise. Pitbull 2 levels Candido and then he went after Francine and a roll-up by Douglas and just a two. Pitbull two with a clothesline and Shane Douglas is down. A belly to belly by Shane Douglas and three.
In the end at 20:43 Shane Douglas is the tv champion.
This match had its slow moments but was not bad at all.
Now a guy in Rude jacket came out but it was Brian Lee. Rick Rude the real one shows up in a leather jacket and they lay out the Franchise.

5) Taz (with Bill Alfonso) vs Sabu
?
Two former co-holders of the ECW tag belts.
?
An important match in ECW history and for both men in their career.
?
The match starts off with Taz and Sabu face to face.
Tha battle of the ultimate bad asses here. Fans loving it. Taz slaps Sabu and both men fire back. Taz catches him with a clothesline. Taz catches Sabu mid-way going for the Tazmission but Sabu blocked it, Styled claims it is the first time that has ever been done.
?
Some nice chain-wrestling, hammerlocks into reversal, into a wait-lock go-behind into a drop toe-hold by Taz into a ankle pick as he twists on the mat.
Some brutal fighting and some mat work by Taz. Nobody can match Taz on the mat, where as Sabu was more of the aerial specialist. Sabu down and Taz with a vicious crossface. Taz with a body-scissors on Sabu, and with hamstrings like that, that must hurt.
Sabu may have a busted nose due to those shots by Taz. Sabu blades in the corner and Taz smells blood and poses in mid-ring. Sabu goes for a chair sets it up and springboards all the way to the outside onto Taz. Both men in the crowd as the Fonsssss is in the ring blowing his whistle.
Sabu takes it to Taz and it becomes an out-right war.
Taz clotheslines Sabu back into the ring and another slugfest breaks out. Sabu all bloodied is taken down and both men roll onto one another.
Another body scissors by Taz. An armbar by Taz as he holds on to Sabu. Sabu makes it to the ropes despite the power from the legs of Taz.
Sabu off the top rope with a summersault legdrop expertly applied to the human wrecking machine Taz. Taz sent to the corner and Sabu gets a chair throwing it at the head of Taz.
?
Taz in the corner caught Air-Sabu with his legs. He missed a second time and Taz dropped Sabu face-first on the chair. Taz could not cover Sabu.
?
Both men hardcore taking it to the outside again, a bloodied Sabu is taken out by Taz. Taz suplexed Sabu through a table set up on the apron and the steel right in front of an OH MY GOD sign.
Sabu back in the ring gets back in the match dropping Taz. Then a leg drop from the heavens as the crowd chant for Sabu. Taz rolls out of the ring and an elbow to the face from Sabu to Taz.
Taz rolls Sabu into the ring and now he locks on chinlock into a belly to belly suplex to Sabu wonderfully. Unreal.
Suplesxes are devastating but Sabu reverses a T-Bone into one of his own mocking Taz. Sabu has the Tazmission on Taz until a T-Bone belly to back Tazplex from Taz to Sabu and then another!
Taz kicking the shi* out of bloodied Sabu now with a vulnerable neck. Taz with the Tazmission and now in the middle of the ring Sabu begins to drop his arms and Taz has got it!
In the end at 17:49 Taz is the winner.
This match got good reviews.
It complimented the show and characters wonderfully.

6) Terry Funk vs The Sandman and Stevie Richards (with Hollywood Nova, The Blue Meanie, Thomas Rodman, 7-11) in a Three Way Dance to be the #1 Contender
?
?
The winner of this to take on Raven for the ECW title.
?
?
Could this match live up to the hype the event had?
Stevie Richards as he elluded to in the fabulous documentary of the Rise and Fall of ECW was beyond priviledged just to be included in this match.
April 13th 1997 was probably the most memorable show ECW ever put on says Heyman.
Three different styles going at it here and it`s pretty interesting, two men would be eliminated in this bout and one man would be the survivor. That`s how this works.
Stevie Richards was from Philly and “Big Stevie Cool“ got a big “bWo“ chant when his name was announced. Sandman gets a better ovation, and then the Hardcore Legend, or plain Wrestling`s Living Legend and now WWE Hall of Famer, Terry Funk got the best ovation.
“Terry“ chants break out and Sandman offers The Funker a beer, he says no and Sandman guzzles it down, spits it in Richard`s face and smacks the beer against his head.
Triple Side headlock and Sandman shoulder blocked Stevie and he fell to the mat, all three men off the ropes then stop and it looks awkward.
A tie-up between Stevie Richards and Funk and Sandman kicks Stevie Richards in the ribs. Funk chops Stevie and he fires back. Funk chops Sandman and the fans are in WOOOOOO mode. Funk pushed Sandman over and a schoolboy by Stevie who tripped him and got a two count. Funk going for the spinning toehold on Sandman and then Stevie Richards clotheslined him.
Both Sandman and Stevie Richards dropped elbows to Funk taking the older man out seemingly, Dreamer says this is like watching his Father get beat up. Stevie Richards slammed Terry Funk to the mat and got a two. Sandman picked up Richards and instead of planting him on Funk like he said he would, he hit a belly to back suplex, the bWo on the outside was outraged. Fans cheer the “cool“ double cross by Sandman who leaves ringside momentarily.
A hangman`s neckbreaker and a couple other blows take Stevie Richards down but he kicks out. Sandman tossed a Ladder into the ring and it connected Funk in the head. Sandman dropped back with the Ladder and it planted on Big Stevie Cool. Sandman levelled Funk out when he got to his feet. Beulah has a headset and she doesen`t speak, oh well.
A ddt by Sandman to Stevie Richards. The Ladder set up in the corner, Terry Funk and The Sandman climb both ends and brawl at the top. Sandman gets a few shots and Funk poses up high and then hits Stevie Richards with a moonsault off the Ladder. Stevie was not even close to Funk but he is 53 years old, so we can`t fault him and this was pretty amazing. Sandman then dropped the Ladder on Stevie Richards in the middle of the ring.
“EC DUB“ chants galore. Sandman is busted open and he took down both Richards and Funk.
Sandman scoops up Stevie and slams him on Funk.
Sandman picked up the Ladder and hit Richards, Funk knocked him down. Sandman back to his feet barely and then set up the Ladder in the corner of the squared circle. Stevie Richards reversed an irishwhip and sent Sandman to the corner hitting his back hard to the Ladder. Sandman kicked out. Richards slammed Funk and he kicked out. Sandman grabbed the Ladder and put it in the middle of the ring, while an elbow and a fist blow met Funk down on the mat by the two opponents.
Sandman climbed the Ladder as did Richards who both exchanged punches. Funk then pushed both of them off the Ladder. Funk picked up the Ladder and spinned around knocking out both Sandman and Stevie Richards a number of times. Dreamer calls this the greatest three way dance he has ever seen. That might be pushing it. However Funk`s performance here was definitely inspiring.
Funk met Sandman with a righthand and then he drilled Funk headfirst into the Ladder. Stevie Richards climbed to the top rope and pushed the Ladder up into the face of Funk and Sandman as the Ladder was set up on the ropes. bWo chants and Stevie Richards sets up for the Stevie Kick in Shawn fashion and met Sandman but he kicks out. Stevie Richards waited on Funk and met him with one, both guys covered Terry and he kicks out. Sandman picked up the Ladder and tossed it on Stevie on the outside. Sandman tossed Stevie Richards over the gaurdrail and to the concrete floor. Terry Funk hot hit with a shot by Sandman. Sandman then ran off the ropes and elevated himself over the top rope and dropped on the Ladder which hit Stevie Richards in the face.
Funk grabbed a chair and hit Sandman and Stevie Richards back and forth with a chair. Funk looked absolutely crazy here. Funk threw Richards over the gaurdrail by the ring area. Sandman left once again to the back area for perhaps another weapon. Funk suplexes Stevie Richards with a corkscrew vertical suplex.
For the second time Sandman comes back and throws a weapon into the ring and it connects with Funk in the head to a huge crowd reaction. This time it was a trashcan. Sandman picked up Stevie Richards and suplexed him hard to the mat. Funk covered him and got a two count. Sandman and Funk both stand up and Stevie Richards is down on the mat. This three way dance has a very slow pace but the moves are definately good for the most part.
A spike piledriver by Funk to Stevie Richards as Sandman helps him out by jumping off the top and planting him down. Funk nailing Stevie and then Sandman botched a Ladder drop to him somewhat. Funk elevated Sandman into the ring and he came in with a Senton slingshot splash and Stevie Richards kicked out to a big reaction.
What was fascinating here was the fact all three guys were fan favourites. Sandman then went to hit Stevie Richards with a Ladder in another see-saw type move off the ropes to the middle rope, but it flew in the air and it ended up hitting himself, fans chant ECW. Sandman pissed off threw a chair now and hit Stevie this time with a weapon. Good aim I guess.
Dreamer calls Raven a bastard on commentary and it`s quite humerous. A double powerbomb to Big Stevie Cool and he is eliminated, the bWo help him out, some fans chant “bullsh*t.“
The Sandman grabbed Terry Funk and slammed him down. Funk gets up and Sandman grabbed Streamer`s under the ring with barbedwire wrapped around them. Funk hit The Sandman with a metal sheet and then put his shirt over his head blinding him and then used him as a punching bag. Funny stuff. The Funker grabs the barbed wire and hits Sandman`s bareback with it, some of it gets caught in his skin as its clear. Fans react accordingly, Styles gets nautious from the booth. Sandman gets out of it by smacking Funk with a metal sheet to the head. Sandman rushed Funk with some barbedwire and then went to the top and dropped the leg on Funk and he managed to kick out somehow. Big Stevie Cool still on the apron and he distracts The Sandman and Funk puts a trashcan over his head and smacks away at him and Stevie then gives him a Stevie kick. Funk goes up to the top rope and then hits a moonsault on Sandman who is covered in barbedwire and Funk covered Sandman. In the end at 28:40 Funk wins to a good pop.
This one was significant at the end of the day and still very good for what it was, but it was not nearly as great as once remembered.
Still very much relevant, though…

7) Main Event- Raven (c) vs Terry Funk for the ECW World Title
?
?
So now Terry Funk after that half hour war at his age had to go up against the young and fresh World Champion Raven.
?
Terry Funk has the fans on his side. Dreamer on commentary said he just has to watch this and for Joey to leave him alone.
Raven busts Terry wide open as blood is dripping all over.
Raven had his share of fans but Terry Funk was the living Hardcore Legend! Fans chanting Tommy.
Terry Funk on the mat bleeding while Raven gets out of the corner and stomps on a bloodied olderman who has been battered and bruised. Raven ruthlessly just measures Terry Funk with shot after shot. Funk swinging blindly.
?
Most of this match happened with Dreamer getting involved on the outside, but Raven one with an inside cradle at the end.
?
In the end at 7:20 Terry Funk won the ECW title at 53 years old! Ending ECW and the first ppv on a good note.

Final Rating for “ECW Barely Legal 1997” = 8.5/10
?
This event will forever be historic for being the first PPV event for Extreme Championship wrestling. As it said in the film Beyond the Mat if this show was not a success, neither would ECW. Well this show came of well thus ECW survived. This show delivered, not one bad match on the card. One of the best shows ever, not just for ECW.
