Brett Mix’s- WWE-ECW Present “One Night Stand 2006” Review
?
“This is better then Monday Night Raw, This is better then Friday Night Smackdown!, Welcome to the re-birth of ECW!!!” –Paul Heyman
?
?
?
?
?
-WWE-ECW One Night Stand 2006 took place on Sunday, June The 11th, 2006 at the Hammerstein Ball Room in New York City, New York in front of 2,460 fans. (60 less then the year before)
?
?
-The build-up for One Night Stand occurred on both Raw and Smackdown! heading into the PPV, but build-up behind the scenes began several months earlier, as WWE was bringing back ECW full time. The news that WWE was planning to bring back ECW was leaked in the middle of April as Vince McMahon decided to revive ECW as a full-time brand.
?
-280,000 people ordered the event.
?
-Heyman began the event as it aired on PPV, coming to the ring to “ECW” chants.Heyman stated that “this [ECW’s resurrection] didn’t happen because of me and it didn’t happen because of Vince McMahon. This happened because of you [the fans]. And on behalf of every single one of us, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you!”.
?
?
-Joey Styles and Taz did commentary. Tazz defeated Lawler in a 35 second squash after the Tazmission and that was the first bout.
?
-Now onto the other portion of the PPV……………
?
ECW is chanted just like the last year.
?
?
Paul Heyman is introduced and he comes out to an amazing pop.?Heyman talks about how ECW is back and I think a lot of people wanted to believe it would be back in a different way but that was not the case. The only good thing this version of ECW gave us was Kelly Kelly in my opinion but that could be debated I guess.

1) Opening Contest- Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle
?
?
Angle represented ECW and Orton Raw.
?
Fans pumped again for what should be a great opener after already seeing Taz squash a heel Lawler which was nice to see once again.
That was the official opener.
?
Anyway this is the first match I am counting for the ppv.
Randy Orton sure heard it from the ECW fans, not like Cena was but he still definitely heard it.
Kurt Angle wants to get his Extreme Wrestling on-slaught on Orton but he goes to the outside of the ring and is greeted with a less then flattering chant.
The ECW fans are ready and rip into Orton.
Angle with a single-leg takedown trying to get an ankle lock. Fans chant for Angle to break his ankle and Orton escapes the ring.
Side headlock takeover to Orton on the mat. Angle with a hard shoulder block then another side headlock takeover. Randy Orton cautiously gets back in and Angle with a shoot on Orton and takes him over in spine-buster form and Angle slaps the back of the head of Orton over and over, crowd seems to love it.
Orton tries to take Angle over but Angle says he is not able to do it. Angle with a belly to back suplex. Angle charged into the corner and Randy Orton moved out of the way as Angle rams his shoulder into the ring-post. Orton with a haard shot and a clubbing forearm. A strong European uppercut to Angle by Randy Orton.
Randy Orton keeping on Angle and the fans get on Cena again just like they did in the opening match of the last One Night Stand.
You cant Wrestle chant to Orton even though he hits a snapmare to Angle and locks in a reverse chinlock. Angle only gets a two.
Angle hits a series of German Suplexes to Orton and then gets the third done and the fans eat it right up as Angle stomps on the mat waiting for Orton to get up slowly, as Angle gains the momentum.
Angle goes for an Angle Slam but Randy Orton countered in mid-air with a beautiful arm-drag and then a nice dropkick followed by a nearfall. Randy Orton with a headlock on Angle and then trying for an inverted ddt, Angle reversed with a belly to back suplex and takes off his shoulder straps. Angle hits the Angle slam and Orton kicks out.
Angle goes for the Ankle now and Orton rolls out sending Angle head-first to the buckle and now a neck-wrench by Orton as Angle falls down, but still Angle manages to kick out. Orton with a dropkick from the top rope and a impactful, vicious clothesline. Orton stalking Angle for the RKO but Angle goes for an Angle Slam and Orton gets an inside cradle and a two. Angle fights out of this predicament and makes Orton tap to a big pop.
?
So in the end at 15:07 Angle beat Orton by submission.
This match served as a tremendous opener. A nice story they told. A good flow with great chemistry.

2) The F.B.I. (Little Guido Maritato and Tony Mamaluke) (with Big Guido) vs Yoshihiro Tajiri and Super Crazy
?
?
Last year three of these guys put on a great three way dance.
Now we see some tag action.
Super Crazy and Mamaluke get ready to go at it, and a waist-lock. An arm-wrench and a snapmare by Crazy.
Super Crazy with an arm-drag takeover and Mamaluke with a short arm-scissors.
Fast tag action and Crazy rolls out of all kinds of predicaments. Crazy with great strength picking him up, shades of the legendary Bob Backlund and he drops him. Super Crazy faceplants his man. Crazy with a press splash moonsault and two.
Little Guido and Tajiri are both tagged in and Little Guido is a bit hesitant to get in the ring.
Fans are really loving this match.
Crazy back into the ring and hits a big-time moonsault to Little Guido and company outside the ring.
Crazy is pulled down by Big Guido on the outside. Little Guido sends Crazy into the steel guardrail.
Big Guido stomps on him.
All sorts of high risk action in this one, a fun match! Better then last years three way dance which was half the length of this one. Non-stop entertainment here. Top notch, high quality stuff. Nacho-Libre chants are heard.
Super Crazy hung onto the lake of Mamaluke and drove him to the mat, a nearfall. Now Mamaluke with an interesting cradle submission hooking the legs, now pulling the arms getting a camel clutch of sorts. Little Guido jumps off the top hitting him off with a dropkick.
Tajiri with big kicks to his opponents, nobody delivers them better. The late Test did a solid job at this as well but Yoshihiro Tajiri is the best.
Little Guido now taking it to Super Crazy. Tajiri with a beautiful hand-spring off the ropes not having lost a step with a reverse elbow to both opponents. A japanese-whip and a side-kick to Little Guido and then a nearfall followed by a vicious uppercut.
What action!
Action in both corners, a Tarantula by Super Crazy and Tajiri, a double submission hold until Big Guido comes in and misses. Both Crazy and Tajiri double drop-kick him down. A double clothesline by the FBI and now Little Guido recieves a boot to the face by Super Crazy.
Little Guido hung Crazy upside down kicked him off the apron over the front row. Tajiri on the top caught a shot and both FBI members hit a double fisherman buster.
In the end at 12:24 the FBI got the victory.
This match was amazing. So much quality, reminded me of some WCW tags in the mid 90s.
?
Big Show comes out after the match and cleans house.

-JBL cuts another money promo on the ECW crowd. Two of the most trusted WWE security guards are by JBL, I have had some interactions with both men at live events, they are the cream of the crop security wise.

3) Rey Mysterio (c) vs Sabu in an Extreme Rules match for the World Heavyweight Championship
?
?
A dream match of sorts, aerial offense at its best.
Both men begin with chairs in hand.
Fans clearly going for Sabu.
The match starts off with Rey Mysterio taking down Sabu with a side head-lock and a drop toe-hold, Sabu rolls out.
Both men knock Chairs into one another and Sabu flips Rey high in the air and into the corner and launched himself into Rey Rey in the corner.
Rey though off the ropes ducks a moonsault and hits a drop toe-hold driving Sabu head-first into the chair. Rey from the air goes for a 619 and Sabu takes out his legs. Sabu tossed the chair into the head of Rey.
Sabu brings out a table and sets it up on the barricade and on the apron.
Sabu with momentum carrying him forward missed Rey by the table and Mysterio sends him head-first into the steps. Mysterio with a moonsault off the top onto Sabu. Mysterio caught in a camel clutch as the Sheik is chanted. Sabu goes under the ring and gets a chair and drops the steel chair onto Mysterio. Sabu keeps taking it to Rey.
Sabu with a leg-drop off the top to Mysterio caught on the middle ropes landing on his head!
Nice!
Sabu takes his time but Rey fights back.
Rey Mysterio taking it to the extreme with a springboard onto Sabu onto the wooden table breaking it with a senton.
Sabu launches off of a chair onto the ropes and a moonsault, amazing agility onto Rey. This is Awesome is chanted.
Rey goes to springboard onto Sabu and hits his groin on the chair. Sabu throws the chair into the head of Rey. Sabu sets up Mysterio on the wooden table and now Sabu grabs a chair to try and launch himself off.
Sabu hits a ddt to Rey Mysterio on the wooden table! Unbelievable.
In the end at 9:10 the two men battle to a no contest and Rey retains the title as a result.
This match for a spot-fest was done wonderful.

4) Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer and Beulah vs Mick Foley, Edge and Lita
I always had a soft spot for Beulah, or maybe a hard one depending on how you look at it.
Either way, she came back here and teamed up with Dreamer and the Funker. The match, and the lead to this match you’ll find a lot out about in Foley’s third major novel-autobiography, “Hardcore Diaries” which I’m sure you can find online somewhere today. (Puts up thumb)
Mick Foley was ready.
Mick Foley gets on the mic and he was a Heel at this time. Foley said he did sell out, he sold out Madison Square Garden. Foley also goes on to say things like he missed when a creative genius like Stephanie McMahon ran ECW, and long live the Alliance. Good stuff.
Edge then came out and ripped on ECW fans.
Lita calls Dreamer the Innovator of Silence and then Edge and Mick slap hands. Good stuff. She continued to rip on ECW fans and Dreamer both.
Beulah came out and then got on the mic and ripped on Lita.
Lita slapped Beulah and then she began to choke her until the official’s broke it up.
Out came Funk.
Edge with a side headlock to Dreamer and he came off the ropes with a leapfrog and then a side headlock takedown. Edge went for an inziguri and Dreamer ducked. Fans chanted for Dreamer.
In came Mick Foley after a tag from Edge. Mick Foley pointed at Funk on the apron. Fans chanted for the now Hall Of Famer in Terry Funk.
Terry sqaured off with Mick slapping him over and over until he backed off to the ropes. Mick Foley decided to leave the ring and got on the apron and started to leave, until Edge grabbed Funk from behind.
Tommy Dreamer then tossed Edge over the ropes to the outside.
All four men began brawling on opposite sides of the ring. Funk and Foley on one side, Dreamer smashed a pan over the back of Edge on the other. Dreamer threw a trashcan into the ring. Dreamer smacks a pan over the head of Foley back in the ring and then the trashcan at Edge while the fans chant “EC Dub”.
Funk placed the can infront of Foley’s head and Dreamer hit a baseball slide into the can into Foley’s head making him fall under the bottom rope to the floor. Edge then grabbed a pan and smacked it viciously over the head of Tommy Dreamer. Foley on the outside unleashed a series of righthands to the head of Funk.
Foley dragged Funk to the back and threw him against the steel barricade of the entrance way.
Dreamer reversed a spear attempt in mid-air hitting a hiplock on Edge who charged towards him on top of the Ladder in the corner! Nice spot.
Funk on the outside drove Foley’s battered head into the steel steps.
Funk then wore the Ladder on his shoulder spinning around knocking off everyone in sight as the fans applauded.
Terry Funk headbutts Foley and then they set up a giant Ladder in the corner of the ring. Funk up high on the Ladder was caught by Edge who pushed the Ladder over and Terry landed back first on the other side of the ring hard onto the mat. Big bump for a man of his age.
Edge now standing tall picked up Dreamer but he fought back with shots to the abdomen. Dreamer looking for a slam but Lita came in from behind and hit a lowblow on Dreamer while Beulah looked on in disgust. Fans ripped on Lita of course, any chance they could with your typical ECW chants you could imagine.
Edge and Foley underneath the ring pulled out a flat, wooden table covered in barbedwire and placed it under the bottom rope onto the canvas.
Both men flipped it over and slammed it on top of Tommy Dreamer who shook in pain after the wire stuck to him.
As they turned the table over it was still stuck to a piece of his head, which I’m sure wasn’t planned but looked even better.
As Edge and Foley picked up the table yet again Funk tripped Edge from outside the ring and the table landed on Edge and he rolled out of the ring getting the worst of that exchange. Dreamer picked up the table and placed it in the corner while Funk rammed Foley’s head into the corner.
Fans chanted for fire. Dreamer irishwhipped Foley into the table covered in wire. Dreamer and Foley then threw Mick Foley back first into the wired table.
Edge on the outside dropped Dreamer groin first on the barricade. Foley was busted open. Foley then threw the table covered in wire at Funk.
Lita outside the ring grabbed wire and gave it to Foley. Foley wrapped it around his arm and Mick dropped it on top of Funk.
Funk a bloody mess recieved “Terry” chants. Foley continued to rip apart Funk’s bloodied head. Edge posed for some heel heat, blood was dripping down his face in the worst way and his eye could barely open. Mick Foley choked out Funk in the corner. Funk screamed for his eye which you literally could not see.
Fans chanted for Terry as they dragged him to the back. Edge hit dreamer with a trashcan lid. Foley grabbed the barbedwire bat and slammed it against Dreamer’s back, as it was now three on two.
Foley placed the bat in the groin of Dreamer and Lita went to familar territory in between the legs of another man dropping her leg on top of the bat, into the groin of Dreamer.
Foley slapped the Mandible Claw on Beulah and then inside the ring put it into the face of Dreamer. Edge hit a spear on him in mid-ring. Edge said no to covering him and went after Beulah.
Edge got behind Beulah and went for a pumphandle slam it would seem but he liked standing in this position for a bit.
Funk came back taped up with a barbedwire bat to a huge ovation. Good stuff.
Terry Funk the sympathetic hero at this time distracted both Mick Foley and Edge and Dreamer hit a lowblow on them buying Funk time to get back in th ering.
Funk unloaded with shots to the abdomen and back of Foley with the bat and then a couple of hard shots to Edge right after. Fans applauded the mayhem.
Funk with a barbedwire bat on fire swung at Foley and he continued to hit Mick until it set him on fire!
With Foley on Fire, Funk hit him off the apron onto the wooden table covered in barbedwire. Edge from behind knocked Terry off the apron on top of Foley, on top of the Wooden table full of barbedwire.
Dreamer then hit a DDT on Edge in mid-ring and choked him out with wire!
Lita kicked at Dreamer, and then Beulah ran in and swung Lita back and crawled on top of her and a catfight broke out finally.
Dreamer picked up Lita and hit the Dreamer Driver. Both Dreamer and Beulah posed and Edge wrapped wire around his head planting him back first onto the canvas. Edge then hit a Spear on Beulah and pinned her in the most insulting way.
In the end Edge’s team wins at 18:45.
You had to give these guys credit.
A modern day, Hardcore Classic.

5) Balls Mahoney vs Masato Tanaka in an Extreme Rules Match
?
?
Masato Tanaka had that memorable classic with Mike Awesome the year before.
The match starts off with Balls Mahoney and Masato Tanaka delivering some straight blows to the head and then the crowd love chanting with Balls and for the big Maaaaaaahoney on the uppercut.
Taz says there is nothing like the ECW crowd.
Mahoney curses on way out as he was elevated by Masato Tanaka and its beeped out.
Masato Tanaka drives himself over the top rope onto Mahoney.
Mahoney connects with a shot to the head of Masato Tanaka and then drink a beer and knocks Masato Tanaka out.
EC Dub is chanted over and over. Masato Tanaka lays in the ring but meets Balls on the top and hits an impressive superplex to Balls Mahoney considering his size.
Now it is the turn of Mahoney to do the same to Masato Tanaka as he drives Masato Tanaka with a superplex off the top.
Masato Tanaka grabs a chair and Mahoney has one as well.
Both guys go to battle in mid-ring with the chair. Masato Tanaka loses his and Balls drills him in the head breaking the chair.
That is hardcore, he gets the pinfall.
In the end at 5:03 Balls won the match.
This match was short and simple, got everyone pumped up for the Main Event.

6) Main Event- John Cena (c) vs Rob Van Dam for the WWE Championship in an Extreme Rules Match
?
?
Styles warned us all night Cena would be booed out of the building as if we needed that bit of info.
Cena was not even accepted by WWE crowds at this time, so he would surely be chewed out at an ECW event facing Van Dam for the title.
The If Cena wins we Riot sign said it all.
?
Cena came out to the biggest HEEL when Face reaction ever.
Every time he threw his shirt in the crowd he had it thrown back.
Even toilet paper was thrown on the man.
?
Wow.
?
Anyway here we go.
The crowd made this match better much like the Cena-Hunter battle from the same year at Mania 22.
Styles calls RVD perhaps the greatest wrestler to never hold the world title. I dont think he is better then DiBiase and Owen myself but he was up there before the end of this match. (Would say Vader and Hennig as well but they both won different promotion world belts)
Fans chant RVD, RVD, RVD.
John Cena got caught in the head after RVD missed the inziguri.
The crowd just loved this whole ordeal chanting WHOLE FU**IN SHOW to Van Dam and voicing their disproval of Cena the whole night.
Probably not one of the better nights in the career of Cena.
Both Cena and Van Dam square off with rightsand RVD knocks Cena down. The crowd can definitely make a match better then it would of normally been.
Cena with a powerslam to Van Dam and now RVD kicks out. Cena clotheslines RVD to the outside.
Fans chant Same old Sh** to Cena. Where were these chants to Hogan in the 80s…hmm.
Cena off the top comes off with a double axe-handle Savage like (even though it was a terrible attempt), I guess because he wanted to be somebody different. Fans hilariously chant you still suck.
?
Both men brawl on the outside and John Cena sends Rob Van Dam into a wooden table. John Cena launched Rob Van Dam into the third row from the outside.
?
Cena sends Van Dam into the crowd and held a Fu** you Cena sign on Van Dam before punching it. I was never a big fan of Cena but I truly felt bad for him this night.
Rob Van Dam comes off the apron after posing with his taunt and drops the leg on Cena with his cork-screw leg-drop on the gaurdrail.
Rob Van Dam delivering everything in his offensive on-slaught and then a rolling thunder on a steel chair onto the WWE Champion in Cena while the fans chanted RVD but he still only got a two as he crawled over to super Cena twice.
RVD with a scoop slam and then went for a splash but Cena scouted it getting a chair up and landing a ddt onto RVD onto a steel chair on the mat. Nearfall.
Cena can not seem to get RVD but he catapolts RVD into a steel chair in the corner of the ring. Cena throws RVD down and goes for the three. Rob Van Dam kicks out.
Cena goes for a five knuckle shuffle which gets a terrible reaction as expected. Cena then salutes RVD. Cena goes for the FU and Van Dam counters with a spinning heel kick. Cena and RVD both fall back from the top and Cena keeps trying to pin Rob Van Dam but fails each time.
Rob Van Dam dropkicks off éèthe apron into the steel on the floor.
RVD sets up a wooden table into the corner of the ring, and somehow Cena locks on the STFU to which HHH tapped out at Wrestlemania 22 with.
Cena clotheslines the referee and now Cena has RVD up high on the top turnbuckle and lands a superplex.
Cena gets the luxury of having a Smackdown! referee but only a two. Cena F-Us Rob Van Dam to the outside.
Then a guy in a leather jacket spears Cena through the table. Edge taunts Cena while the fans thank him. Great stuff.
Cena down in the middle of the ring.
Rob Van Dam goes for it! Rob Van Dam hits the five star frog splash. No ref, but in runs Heyman.
1…..2….3! Everyone pops!
What a moment.
Goosebumps.
?
In the end at 20:41 Rob Van Dam got the win when Heyman counted the three and RVD wins the WWE Title.
?
This match gets better with each watch, a borderline classic.
?
?
It gets bonus points for being a significant moment in the career of RVD, but that being said it was still executed tremendously.

Final Rating for “WWE-ECW One Night Stand 2006” = 8.5/10

This event was a ton of fun. Not quite as much fun as the year before but I nearly forgot just how wonderful this event was. Not one bad match on the card and most of them better then great, capped off with one of the most memorable moments in history. Such a fun night with a fun crowd. The only bad side is that the REAL ECW could not stay but as an event this was wonderful. Such great quality with each match and a ton of entertainment. A must-own.
