This week revealed the following 2 WWE DVD projects in the works for late 2017, and today we’ve been able to officially confirm their go-ahead:

— “1997: Dawn of the Attitude”

— “NXT: From Secret to Success”

The 1997-themed Home Video offering is indeed scheduled for October 2017 as suggested and you may recall there being rumblings of such a release this time last year. If the details in WWE-issued surveys are to be believed this one could take the form of a “Best of” compilation to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the stand-out year that kicked off the Attitude Era.

A look back at the year 1997. It was the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin, the birth of DX, the summer of the Hart Foundation and the debut of Kane. And who could forget the infamous Montreal Screwjob?

Moving ahead to December 2017, as of right now the company will be releasing a new NXT DVD!

Appearing as “The Rise of NXT” on those aforementioned surveys, WWE’s second Home Video on NXT is speculated to tell the story of the brand, its beginnings and its rise to prominence, and of course present a selection of accompanying matches and moments.

The upcoming 1997 and NXT titles are expected to be produced as the usual three-disc DVD sets, while Blu-ray editions could be possible for whichever have documentaries in their content.

That’s October and December sorted, but we’ve heard what’s planned in between! can exclusively reveal early word of WWE planning a Survivor Series-themed DVD to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the event having first began in 1987.

“30 Years of Survivor Series” was a DVD/Blu-ray concept first talked about back in early 2016 — could it take the form of a compilation highlighting the greatest matches and moments in the PPV’s history, perhaps a “True Story” follow up to WrestleMania and Royal Rumble, or might this be the opportunity for WWE to complete the “Survivor Series Anthology” box set that never was?

Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

  1. Michael torres says:

I guess it should be fun to watch and all that new stuff to come.

  2. Ronaldo Rodriguez says:

bet hart vs stone cold Steve Austin street fight from raw and wrestle mania 13 and in your house !

  3. SCSA says:

Great matches mentioned below, though just on a side note, I would like to wish to see a set like the ‘John Cena – Greatest Rivlaries’ set, where he was shown having his rivlaries w/several superstars w/2matches shown for every rivlary 🙂
I’m not really a John Cena fan, although I must say that most of his matches on that set were amazing!

It would be great to see more sets like that for guys like Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Triple H, Stone Cold, CM Punk, The Undertaker & others!

As for back to the True story of the Survivor Series, I would love to see this match on the set which was a very mysterious match for me back in my days…

The Hart Family (Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Bruce Hart, and Keith Hart) (with Stu Hart) Vs Shawn Michaels and His Knights (Shawn, The Red Knight, The Blue Knight, and The Black Knight) – 4 on 4 elimination match!

    • whutwhut says:

is there really a need for that, though?

afair there were at least some matches on the Cena set that were previously unreleased (or at least not released apart from the initial ppv releases etc.).

but pretty much every of the big rivalries the workers you had has already been covered, usually even on their very own dvds.

  4. Guest says:

I would like a documentary on Mid South Wrestling. A ton of big names went through that promotion. Maybe they could double up and include championship wrestling from Florida into the documentary as well. I mean they did one on world class championship wrestling and mid South was so much better.

    • whutwhut says:

probably not going to happen, at least not on physical media, since (afaik) the “Legends of Mid-South” set wasn’t that big of a seller.

    • Andrew Dellorfano says:

Checkout the Legends of MidSouth DVD that would b the doc you would want

  5. Guest says:

I hope triple h vs Sgt slaughter boot camp match gets added. Along with Ken shamrock vs shawn michaels and Ken shamrock vs vader. Also taker vs mankind and the vader vs Steve Austin vs bret hart vs taker match from final four February 1997. My favorite year of wrestling.

  6. Anan says:

Looking forward to the NXT doc as it’s their best brand right now! As for what matches I wanna see on the set, tough call as they’ve got a ton of great ones to choose from! Nakamura vs Zayn, DIY vs Revival, alongside matches involving Balor, Asuka, Bayley all come to mind here.

SSeries….if it’s a True Story set, hope to see a chapter on debuts as some big names debuted here. Kane’s official in ring debut happened here vs Mankind, Rock and of course Taker debuted here too.

Dawn of Attitude….guessing Kane’s debut means the Taker vs HBK match will appear here. Wanna see the closing tag match from Canadian Stampede where Hart Foundation went against SCSA, LOD, Goldust, Shamrock, Taker vs Bret from SSlam make the cut too.

    • whutwhut says:

btw: it’s kind of weird that the first Hell in a Cell match has never been released on bluray.

  7. john peterson says:

Hopefully this Survivor Series set will be in the same vein as the true story of Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble Sets. And with this, that means hopefully next year we’ll get a Summerslam type set next year since it’ll be 30 years of Summerslam.

    • Anan says:

Totally agree with you on this! Although the True Story wasn’t so great far ad reviews go though WM was better than RR.

I hope to one day see a documentary set on RAW, recognized by the company as the flagship show so deserves the doc treatment, followed by a documentary on SD/SDLive

  8. Justin F says:

Here’s an idea, why don’t you finish the Survivor Series Anthology set instead of this 30th anniversary DVD?

    • Bryan G says:

      I agree with this.

      • SCSA says:

Thanks to you 3 for speaking some sense! I never use the Network, mostly because I just don’t watch the WWE anymore! I’m just in to watching sets that involve matches from the past (mainly from 88-2003)!

I therefore don’t want use of the Network either & just like ‘Justin F’ says, I’d rather stick to my Personal Collection.

        I agree too.

        • LP1 says:

You don’t use the Network because you’re into watching matches from 1988-2003. You do realize that there are literally thousands and thousands of matches from those years on the Network, right? The majority of them have never been released on DVD or BR and probably never will.

          • RabidHeat says:

Yes, but you have to wonder as to the quality (in general) of said matches if it’s 2017 and they have still never been released on DVD.

            • LP1 says:

I’m talking about the matches from those years 88-03, that are already on the Network. All of the Raws, Smackdowns, Prime Times, PPVs, Nitros, WCW, ECW, USWA, and the list goes on and on. The quality wouldn’t be any better on DVD than they already are on the Network.

              • whutwhut says:

                I assume you misunderstood RabidHeat.

I think he/she meant that if it still hasn’t been put on dvd, it’s most likely not that good/relevant anyway.

(with the only exception being a handful of Benoit matches)

      • brandon vendetta says:

I also agree. Most of the people who comment on this site just will never understand that not everyone has the network. Not only that but they will argue with you and try and make you feel like you are less of a wrestling fan because you don’t have it.

        • whutwhut says:

one the other hand you could also argue that especially physical media and which releases get greenlit is based on the (expected) sales.

but a Survivor Series anthology is probaby expected to perform very poorly (I guess since most of the potential buyers are expected to be Network subscribers as well).

(keep in mind that due to the numbers the Anthology releases did the decision was made to not do another Survivor Series one as well as not doing any kind of that type of set for King of the Ring and In Your House at all – and much rather go with a “best of” format)

    • Anthony says:

Probably because you can just see every survivor series on the network.

  9. Anthony says:

The nxt dvd that will be released in December will more or less be best of nxt volume 2(unless they include matches that were released in volume 1).

    • some guy says:

I lost my copy of NXT Volume 1 when I moved so I personally hope they include most of the same matches in Volume 2 so I can get them again.

  10. RabidHeat says:

I just had a really funny thought. If WWE are officially acknowledging that 1997 was the “dawn” of the Attitude Era, why the hell did they include so much 1996 content on the Attitude Era Vol. 3 DVD? Double-standards.

    • LP1 says:

Yup, this was a debate that people here had when Attitude Vol 3 came out. Officially WWE Network acknowledges the Attitude Era as lasting from December 15, 1997 (the Vince “we’re entertainment” promo) until Mania 17. No idea why they included matches from the Spring of 1996.

      • RabidHeat says:

Well they were very clever actually; if you look at the blurb of Vol. 3 DVD, it describes matches featuring “all of your favorite Attitude Era superstars”, which they do, but it doesn’t actually state that the matches themselves took place in the era.

      • whutwhut says:

for me it’s much simpler: WrestleMania XIV to WrestleMania X-Seven. the former one started it, the latter closed it.

(I will also argue that while 1997 is similar to 1998, there are still significant differences. Raw hadn’t completely switched to the “crash tv” style yet)

        • LP1 says:

Ive always went with Survivor Series 97 to Mania 17. Survivor Series 97 wws significant for many reasons. Obviously it was the Bret screwjob that lead to the creation of the evil Mr. McMahon character. Also Survivor Series 97 was the first night they debuted the WWF attitude logo by airing those attitude commercials during the show.

  11. Timothy says:

The entrances are clipped to fit the kickoff matches? I think I’ll stick to the US version. As far as a Survivor Series set goes, I’d welcome a True Story type release. Looking forward to finding out what it eventually is soon.

    • RabidHeat says:

But you wouldn’t have the entrances OR the matches for the Kickoff matches on the US version, so the UK version is still better. The above didn’t mean they have edited the entrances on the main show.

      • Timothy says:

The US version does have the entrances intact.

        • Daniel Bee says:

The US version doesn’t have the Kickoff Show matches. The UK version has everything the US one does – including entrances – PLUS the Kickoff show matches (with entrances cut to fit ’em on). Hope it helps.

          • Timothy says:

I misunderstood what was going to be clipped. I’ll clean my glasses before reading from now on lol.

            • RabidHeat says:

Lol, that is what I was trying to say Timothy. The UK version is better any way you slice it.

  12. RabidHeat says:

They are kinda milking this Attitude thing a bit too dry now! Seriously.

    • brandon vendetta says:

Agreed. Not only are they milking it but they are milking it to death. Yes the attitude era was probably the greatest era in wrestling history but enough is enough already. Why does it have to be beaten into the ground!? If there is a list of matches that have not been released from 1997 that are great and are not on countless other sets then ok. Maybe there is?? I can’t keep track anymore, however if there is you know they won’t make the will just be the same matches from that year that have been released like a hundred times already.

      • whutwhut says:

unfortunately it’s that simple: if people keep buying these sets, the WWE will keep on producing them.

a good example for this is the treatment of WCW on home media. we went years without any release solely dedicated the promotion (or one of its shows), but when “The Essential Starrcade” came out, it was so well received that the WWE home video division kept releasing WCW-themed dvds/blurays every year after.

(similar things happened with ECW and with certain workers: obviously there would have been no way that there would be second or third sets if the first one had already bombed)

  13. whutwhut says:

I can’t possible imagine that they will continue with the Survivor Series Anthology releases now that the Network is a thing.

but a set similar to the ones about Mania and the Rumble would also be amazing.

    • Brett Linforth says:

I agree about the anthology – with the WWE Network at people’s disposal, paying for a box-set of all previous Survivor Series events wouldn’t be high on some people’s priority lists. However, a best of – in the same vain as True Stories RR and WW – would almost certainly be something I’d buy!

  14. brandon vendetta says:

What could they possibly put on this dawn of the attitude set that hasn’t been released like a hundred times already??

    • LP1 says:

We still haven’t heard from Tiger Ali Singh, Giant Silva, Yurple The Clown and Just Joe. Their memories of that time are very important.

    • whutwhut says:

especially if it’s not coming out on bluray – which I don’t believe it will (I assume this will likely be a match compilation).

  15. yeahitsme says:

They should show some of Bobby Roodes 2002-2004 jobber matches on the NXT dvd just to give some context to his rise. He used to work on Heat and Velocity a lot as a jobber.

  16. Andrew Michael Dellorfano says:

Just checked And was fortunate enough to find that Dawn of the Attitude (cool title BTW0 is coming out on October 3rd. and NXT: From Secret to Success will be out on December 5th. I know I’m like everyone else I cant wait for these titles. Christmas is looking good

  17. SCSA says:

I’m looking forward to the ‘True Story of The Survivor Series’! I take it this will be a DVD/Blu-Ray 🙂 Blu-Ray could also include some great extra matches too!

& I also hope to see a lot of the original 4 Vs 4 Superstars Survivor Series Elimination matches on the set!

  18. Cherie Smith says:

I was a little disappointed with the lineup of the first NXT DVD set but this new proposed set sounds intriguing as far as matches go I hope they include Adrian Neville vs Finn Balor that match was described as a “wrestling clinic” can’t remember the exact date for it though hopefully someone else does lol

  19. Robert emons says:

So we are getting a dawn of attitude era dvd a survivor series dvd and a nxt DVD this year? Do we know if the survivor series set will be like a big DVD set or split into multiple dvd sets?

  20. Patrick J McNamara says:

Two great sets. Looking forward to adding both to my collection. I love NXT. Hopefully they have the untelevised cage match between Finn Balor and Samoa Joe for the NXT CHAMPIONSHIP. And hoping that they include the NXT CHAMPIONSHIP match between Samoa Joe and Nakamura from Japan as well. I also want some more NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP matches. Along with some NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP matches too. So many more matches to add. How about some of Corey Graves’ matches? He was pretty good.

    • D.P. says:

The cage match between Joe & Balor was televised on a Takeover special. I think you meant the title change which was untelevised but not a cage match.

  21. Foley Is Good says:

Hopefully the NXT release will be Blu ray since it is all HD footage. But I guess that didn’t apply to Seth Rollins.

  22. Jeff Copeland says:

i did not buy the true story of rumble just cause of it lacking so i hope maybe this survivor series dvd is good.

As far as complete set of ppvs they left off at 97 so that be quite a few vols.

    MORE NXT!!!!

  23. Mark Markson says:

I really hope they include Bobby Roodes first NXT Takeover match on the new NXT set. I want to own that epic entrance on blu-ray!

  24. Bin says:

I have asked about the Mania 33 dvd’s Region which is considered Region 2 with the UK version. That version may not play in US or Canada

  25. Tommy D says:

I am SO EXCITED for the new NXT DVD. I was REALLY hoping they would release another this year. Hate that I have to wait until December though!
