Attitude Era DVD Replacing ‘Best of WWE’? Punk Talks DVD Release Date

March 7, 2012 by Daniel Bee

– The verdict on the “Best of WWE 1985-2004” DVD series we’ve been reporting about recently, according to Silver Vision, is that it’s NOT planned for this year, instead stating that it was a project being discussed within WWE.

To speculate, we would guess it was planned at one point and placed on WWE’s 2012 schedule. The reason we believe so is because very specific details were shared with Cue Entertainment magazine. Those being that the series would be comprised of four volumes, covering WWE eras across 1985 to 2004, released at the same time, and each a 4-disc set.

Also noteworthy was that it was mentioned along with the likes of confirmed titles such as The Rock’s DVD, The Story of Edge, and Clash of the Champions. One could also speculate the information was shared prematurely and perhaps now the rumored Attitude Era DVD is coming instead. Last year we saw first hand having WWE’s full year Home Video schedule that titles frequently change.

– Joey Styles clarified on Twitter this week that the upcoming “Biggest Matches in ECW History” DVD will feature only original ECW footage, and not WWE’s version which ran from 2006. This comes as no big surprise since the synopsis for the DVD referenced ECW’s tenure as ending in 2001. Joey may also be hosting the feature.

The new ECW DVD (also on Blu-ray) is available to pre-order at this link.

– Below is the official trailer for WWE Survivor Series 2011. It’s now available in the UK nationwide on DVD and Blu-ray formats. A few of our readers sent word that this Blu-ray is also region free, therefore fans overseas can also play it too.

Speaking of PPV on Blu-ray, the WWE TLC 2011 Blu-ray is also now available in the UK, in stock now exclusively at Silvervision.co.uk.

– CM Punk mentioned his new WWE DVD in a radio interview with WAAF Boston this week (listen). Whilst he is not certain of when the DVD will be released, he referred to September, which is when we’ve been reporting it’s due. We know the Australian WWE DVD distributor has it penciled in on their schedule for October and the US release date is usually about a month prior.

– Today only at WWEShop their “Deal of the Day” promotion contains Blu-ray titles (including Randy Orton: Evolution of a Predator, and Best of King of the Ring) for as little as $5.99 each, and other unmissable $5.99 DVD deals. View the sale & get more info here.

that be awesome if they made this set into a box set

  2. Harry Faversham says:

Yeah, well thats fair enough if thats true. I just did it with the remote and it seemed very easy. I’m not an expert on it but I have done it a few times. I wouldnt want anyone to smash up their stuff though if its risky. Honestly I wouldnt know that much about it. But if you are desperate for tagged classics then perhaps its an option.

    @ RabidHeat

Usually the dodgy hacks are firmware or hardware mods if not done right. But most manufactures have a sequence of numbers you have to press to unlock region free such as “Open/Close, 4 3 1 4, Play, Stop”, etc. Those codes don’t mess up your player if you miscue or input the wrong number.

  4. RabidHeat says:

The thing is Thomas Goodearl and Harry Faversham, if you find a dodgy hack on the web you can totally wreck your DVD player. That’s not a risk a lot of people want to take.

  5. JAF says:

If only the Attitude DVD could look like the picture, with no WWF Blurs and without the WW_ pauses.

  6. Harry Faversham says:

Yeah, I’ve been able to do it with a few dvd players over the years but not all. If you google your model number you may be able to save yourself a decent amount of money as Thomas said. Region 0 is where its at.

  7. Thomas Goodearl says:

You don’t need to pay hundreds of dollars to get a region free DVD player, google your DVD players make and model number with the words ‘Region Unlock’ and somewhere you may find a code to turn your DVD player Region free, once you have done the code, set it to region 0. All DVD players are made Multi Region as it is too expensive to build in the region, so once the players reach their destinations, the region is programmed in, someone has just leaked said codes online. Trust me, I have done it to all my DVD players!

  8. Dave says:

UK Tagged Classics are not region free.

I bought an Oppo BDP-93 which is actually region free for DVDs out of the box but have to buy a mod kit (about $50) that attaches to the USB in the back to have region free Blu-rays. Its pricy at $500 but i think it was worth every cent, amazing and durable player, one of the best players in the market (google it).

I imported Royal Rumble 2009 and Summerslam 2009 Blu-rays from Amazon UK and they played flawlessly on the Oppo, amazing quality.

  9. SRB says:

Tagged Classics are NOT region free. I own several and live in the USA (region 1) They are PAL DVDs (Region 2, I think) You have to buy a region free DVD player

I’m on the fence about purchasing Vengeance 2011 Blu-Ray, any recommendations or thoughts about the event?

  11. Vincenzzzzzo says:

    @Anonymous

I haven’t purchased any Tagged Classics yet, but, I don’t think they’re region free. I have a region free blu-ray player but its only region free for DVD’s, not blu-rays. You’ll have to get a player thats DVD region free.

  12. RabidHeat says:

@Anonymous I’m pretty sure they aren’t Region Free as I took them over to the States once and they wouldn’t play on a DVD player or a PC, but did play on an xBox.

  13. Anonymous says:

Are Tagged Classics DVD’s region free as well?

  14. SRB says:

How about this? NWO 2007 John Cena and Shawn Michaels VS. Batista and The Undertaker

  15. Anonymous says:

@stacy John and they teamed in 2006 as the main event for snme

  16. RabidHeat says:

@SRB I agree actually, when the host pops up TOO much. I didn’t mind DDP on the Nitro set because he only popped up sporadically, and whenever he finally did you were kind of glad of it, as he was filling in some of the gaps with useful information.

@Vincenzzzzzo I agree aswell, actually. I’d been complaining about blurring, then I tried to watch some stuff the other night, and I’ve gotta say the blurring was just not bothering me. The blurring technology must have gotten better and more precise because I hardly notice it anymore. As long as it doesn’t eat into the wrestlers themselves, like it used to, it isn’t as much of an issue. They’ve kind of got it to where the turnbuckles don’t even look blurred, they just look like they were plain black on the original footage, which is pretty cool! Can’t speak for the big logos on the entrace ramp and stuff though, they probably still look pretty blurred.

Although, I’m still SO glad that the UK have the Tagged Classics where it isn’t an issue whatsoever. I could not be satisfied with the Anthology sets. Plus, I think the fact that the Tagged Classics show the original VHS covers (BIG part of my childhood) gives them added value. I don’t ever want to forget what the original VHS covers for each PPV were. 🙂

  17. HHHfan1999 says:

Ok, so The Attitude Era DVD sounds GREAT! Would love to see it! But, also want to see the “Best of Series…” I mean that would be an AMAZING and EPIC series, but would also make it through all the years of WWF/E instead of just those years? And, can’t wait for CM Punk or ECW’s DVD… gonna be AMAZIN!

  18. Stacey John says:

Never before have Wrestlemania opponents teamed-Undertaker/Batista-Cena/Michaels

  19. scsa says:

I’m just ANXIOUS 2C SWEET CHIN MUSIC ON VINCE WEN HBK WAS FIRED AS COMMISIONER! N THE ATTITUDE ERA BETTER B ON BLU-RAY!

  20. Anonymous says:

I think that the Best of WWE DVD should be done Coliseum Home Video style with Mean Gene for the 80’s, JR for the 90’s/Attitude Era and Jerry Lawler for the 00’s and present…I think its a great idea…

  21. Geolink says:

Punk’s will be more or less comparable to Cena’s “Experience” DVD with him telling his story throughout WrestleMania week and then heading into WrestleMania to wrestle Jericho.

  22. ALK says:

Sounds like a job for Mark’s WWE DVD Fantasy Concepts! XD

  23. Vincenzzzzzo says:

    @Thomas Goodearl

Recently, WWE have done a really good job at the blurring aspect of the old logo. Sometimes you can’t even notice the blur. The OLDER DVD’s and footage is the bad blurring. It would at times have the whole friggin’ turnbuckle and ring post blured. Not to mention, the camera crew that wears the WWF logo shirt are blurred, the ring apron, signs in the crowd. I HATE the World Wildlife Fund. They will NEVER see a penny from me. And thats a shame because I love animals.

  24. Vincenzzzzzo says:

Great news about the region free Survivor Series 2011.

I also hope this year OR next year, WWE does go through with the “Era volumes” as reported. It could be a big seller with ALOT of great matches never before released on DVD/Blu-ray.

I’m very exited about the “WCW Clash of the Champions” and the “Biggest Matches in ECW History” both being on Blu-ray. WCW and ECW will probably look awesome in HD.

  25. SRB says:

@RabidHeat. I never even thought a 2 hour documentary would be possible until Foley said they were “filming” for the release. What’s there to film if it isn’t a documentary? The stuff already happened. Unless he’s hosting the set there isn’t much to film, so a documentary is possible. I personally like DVDs without hosts but thats just me. I think of it like a movie that keeps getting interrupted so it can set up the next clip, slows down the pace and leaves the great moments kind of forgotten

  26. RabidHeat says:

So much from the Attitude Era is covered on currently released sets like Best of Raw 15th Anniversary, Best of SmackDown! 10th Anniversary, Best of Raw Vol. 1 & 2, Stone Cold/Rock 3-Disc sets and all of the Tagged Classics sets that I really wonder if I need an anthoogy set based on it. Is there really anything significant from that era that I’m missing currently? I don’t think so. So if it’s a match/moment anthology like Best of Raw Seasons 1 and 2, I just don’t see that there will be anything making it worth the price tag. It’s only selling point will be if it has a 2-hour documentary.

  27. bowers says:

I heard somewhere that the World Wildlife Fund, may be changing they name or something along those lines, that way WWE don’t have the blur out of the WWF logos on old footage. I look forward to the Attitude Era DVD and hope it’s layed out like the best of raw season 1 & 2. it’s a damn shame they abandoned that like Survivor Series

  28. Thomas Goodearl says:

How good will the ‘Best of the Attitude Era’ DVD be with all the WWF logos blurred left, right and centre? Not really looking forward to that!

  29. SRB says:

Thansk for all the wonderful news. Glad to hear the ECW DVD is all original footage. Thank God I wont have to see Lashley/Show for the “ECW” title. Sad to hear the 1985-2004 sets will likely not happen. I wish WWE would take a chance and release bigger sets with more of a payout. And you can’t beat the $5.99 deal
