Shawn Michaels Talks New WWE DVD w/ Bret Hart – Not Montreal Screwjob

June 24, 2011 by Daniel Bee

Most wrestling news sites are picking up on the upcoming WWE DVD as specifically covering “The Montreal Screwjob”. However, according to Shawn Michaels on Twitter the October DVD will not be focused on the controversial incident of 1997.

Judging by messages left by Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and Jim Ross the project does appear to be a DVD on the HBK/Hart rivalry, but as a whole. It also makes sense given that WWE had an Austin/Rock rivalry DVD scheduled for the same time.

Here’s what Shawn Michaels said on Twitter regarding the DVD:

Since its out. Bret Hart & I did do interviews 2day w/ JR. It was awesome to say the least. I REALLY think u all will like it!!

(Reply to fan). Its not a Montreal Screwjob DVD. Since we’re in it can we decide what it is?

(Reply to fan). Discussed everything! There was much, much more to our relationship than just that [Montreal Screwjob].

Bret Hart also took to Twitter following the interviews in Stamford and had this to say:

Early flight tomorrow. DVD shoot went really well. Very cathartic [cleansing] & I think everyone will enjoy it when it’s released.

JR put up some more comments about this DVD project:

Enjoyed spending parts of two days with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels in Stamford, Ct this past week. We actually and accidentally bumped to each other at the hotel on Wednesday night and had a great visit and then had our ‘official’ gathering Thursday morning until mid afternoon doing the taping for the DVD project.

The HBK/Hitman DVD will be released worldwide this October and I have high expectations for the project. The two legendary, WWE stars sat side by side during the shoot facing yours truly who asked them a battery of questions.

This DVD will not solely focus on the Survivor Series in Montreal in 1997 but we obviously spend a significant amount of time discussing the ‘Montreal Screw Job’ and the months leading into the infamous event and how both men’s careers fared after that infamous day in Montreal.

To be able to sit and talk to two WWE Hall of Famers such as Michaels and Hart who did have a bona fide rivalry at one time but also respected the other’s work was a privilege for me. I’m honored to have been assigned this project and hope that it lives up to the expectations we all have for it. I know that both Shawn and Bret were very happy with the day.

For this project to strictly be about Montreal only would be a travesty because neither man’s career can be solely defined by the events of the ’97 Survivor Series.

Hopefully this project will lead to other similar DVDs in the future on where fans can see more of the human side of some of the biz’s biggest personalities.

I’ll tell you this, it takes a lot of courage and character to be honest to the core on these types of productions and Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were definitely honest, open, emotional, and had some compelling things to say. My respect for both men, which was already immense, was elevated even higher after this DVD taping.

Agreed LP1, that could have been me talking.

@LP1.. very good comment below. I completely agree with everything said. HBK/Bret are 2 legends who had a legendary feud and it went on for years. Classic matches and whether the feud existed or not they are two men who deserve dvds and ill never get sick of watching them. cant wait for the content listing.

  4. LP1 says:

@Ricky, the reason this is a “huge coup” for WWE is because getting Bret and Shawn to agree to sit down with eachother is something that a year and a half ago would’ve been considered a wet dream for fans. The real behind-the-scenes stuff that went down between them is some of the most talked about stories among fans for the last 15 years. There was a legit rivalry between these two that was probably bigger than any real-life rivalry in history.

An Austin vs Rock DVD would be cool to see and I think will still come out down the line, but the difference is there was no heat between Rock and Austin in real life. That aspect is what makes the Bret-Shawn DVD so much more appealing to long time fans. And that’s this DVD is aimed for. It’s aimed at the older long time fans who remember the Bret-Shawn feud. I highly doubt all the little Cena fans out will give a crap about this disc since it’s about 2 guys who were feuding before they were even born. And that’s why I like this DVD even more because WWE’s usual M.O. is to cater to the little kids and given them more Cena and Rey DVDs. This one is for the older fans and I love it.

Not to mention Bret and Shawn had much better matches with eachother than Austin and Rock did. Most fans today only know of the Iron Man match and Survivor Series ’97 match, but they had at least a dozen other matches with eachother that have been forgotten over time. This DVD is a definite win.

Austin/Rock better not be cancelled for this

    • Daniel Bee says:

Austin/Rock was also planned for October and I doubt they’d do two big DVDs like that in one month, or any two rivalry sets. I’ll try to find out for sure.

  6. Will NJ says:

Finally a WWE DVD release to be excited about! Seems like it’s been a while. This should be a great multi-disc release, dedicated to 2 guys who always gave all they had for the fans. Growing up as a big fan of both Bret & Shawn, the whole Montreal thing really took the heart out of wrestling for me, as I think it did a lot of others. It was just a shame it had to end that way, and later…as both Shawn & Bret matured, they’ve both said they could’ve handled things better during that time period…and were really played against each other by the office and others in the locker room. It was great to see old wounds healed and the war of words finally end last year when Bret returned. This DVD should continue on that path of celebrating the positve, paying tribute to what was great about these guys…and laying all the childish b.s. and bickering to rest once and for all. Heck…if Bret and Shawn could reconcile, maybe there’s still hope for humanity after all.

Anyone who really knows anything about wrestling knows this is a massive DVD release.

  8. Rob L says:

I haven’t been this excited about a DVD in a long time.

  9. Aaron says:

well it could be worse. i wonder if all the extra matches on the new dvd will be repeats from their past dvd’s.

  10. Daniel Bee says:

New update from JR on Twitter: “Bret/HBK DVD out in Oct. Covers their careers & impact/behind scenes of Montreal 97. Proud of what we got on tape. Open/honest/compelling”. Now confirmed!

  11. Ricky Schmidt says:

In what world was this the biggest DVD project ever? Or even a “huge coup” for the WWE?

  12. SRB says:

i would love a montreal screwjob dvd.. not a big fan about fued DVDs.. a 3 disc set on one fued is kind of a joke. austin/rock, hbk/hart, hogan/andre, edge/cena, hardyz/dudleys.. i wouldnt want 3 discs packed with the same match over and over.

  13. Anonymous says:

Well I really didnt think it was ALL going to be about montreal anyway. Considering how well they worked together that would be ridiculous.
