Breaking: The Rock vs. John Cena Rivalry WWE DVD This Fall?

June 5, 2012 by Mark D

We have learned that WWE are currently producing a DVD and Blu-Ray set titled: The Rock vs. John Cena – Once in a Life Time.

The set is on the schedule for release this fall and could possibly replace the Greatest Rivalry set rumoured earlier this year, given its similar theme.

We speculate the set will feature a documentary – either an extended version of the TV special (as it wasn’t included on the WrestleMania DVD/Blu-ray) or brand new documentary feature; along with the moments and matches leading to: The Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII.

We will have more details on this set in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

    They only had one match.

Something tells me this won’t be the next in the “Greatest Rivalries” line, just a 1-disc set re-capping the feud.

But if it’s 3-discs, I believe it will follow the format of the “New and Improved” and “One Last Stand” DX DVDs, in the sense that it will include every single moment of the feud on TV/PPV, i.e. every segment, promo and interview, and the Survivor Series and ‘Mania 27/28 matches. Everything to do with the feud. In a way it makes sense because they’ve hardly been putting any of the great segments between the two as extras on other DVDs! I mean their “final confrontation” on the ‘Mania DVD was actually the least entertaining skit they’ve done, certainly the least funny.

I think this set will be packed with things like The Rock’s 2011 return, the history lessons, Rock Concert, Cena’s two raps, Cena/Miz/R-Truth matches with run-ins, the Final Confrontation again, all that stuff. Maybe even Brock’s return from the next night considering it started with Cena calling out Rock. A complete document of the year-long feud. If it was presented in that way I actually don’t think it’d be a bad idea!

The ‘Once In A Lifetime’ documentary will pad things out, although I fear music edits on that one!

This set sucks! Though here’s some good news for some UK fans: Silvervision may be coming back in to selling new titles now as Wrestlemania 28 is back up on sale on DVD and Blu-Ray! Even though I hated this set n Im not getting it, Im just happy to see Silvervision looking to be doing more pre-orders again! It’s a good sign*

I think a release of their fued on dvd is a really good idea

  5. NickP says:

The value of this dvd is equal to the value of a Donald Trump vs Rosie O’donnell Raw match dvd.. I can see the dvd production room now.. “lets scrap the best of the United States title dvd and lets give a Rock/Cena dvd to all the kids and women

There is also a rumor that WWE are also releasing sets on Joe Israel, Brett Mix, Mark D and Daniel Bee later this winter.

I’m going to 120 Hamilton Avenue next week to record my interview. Spoilers here on the site soon 😉

What is wrong with everyone? This set will be great for the WWE universe and all kids who were born in January of this year.

  7. mason says:

their wresltemania match was not good at all no excitement their tag team match at survivor series was ok ive seen both of them so not buying this

  8. Danielle says:

I am looking forward to this but 3 discs? I don’t think it will be. If you have the whole once in a lifetime extend that tops 2 or 3 hours&then if you had every segment&the survior series match leading up to it I don’t think it will be more then 6 or 7 hrs. Plus if rock comes back in 2013 he will have some type of interaction with cena so putting a dvd out now may not be too smart

    • RabidHeat says:

You’re forgetting that most 3-disc sets these days have only about 6 or 7 hours of content! Lol.

  9. Scsa says:

IF THIS IS PART OF THE ‘GREATEST RIVLARIES’, THEN HELL NO! I mean come on!! They’ve only had a few matches n where are all the other rivlaries which were promised to b released… ? e.g. Austin / Rock ???

  10. Matt says:

Everyone does know it dosent have to be 3 discs

  11. Quack says:

Unfortunately not looking forward to this at all and it will be a pass for me. 🙁

  12. Anonymous says:

They had 1 Match and it wasn’t that great how are you going to make a 9 hour set on it

  13. Dave says:

What’s funny is that everyone that is complaining, 95% of you people will still buy it or any other DVD/Blu-ray release…all they have to do is slap on the WWE logo. Can’t blame WWE, there are people that buy anything WWE related and this is an example.

Atleast wait until a proper format of the DVD is announced…people are way too quick to judge which is a huge with wrestling fans in general.

Most of the fueds people suggested were kayfabe storylines…Cena and Rock have had legitimate heat.

    • NickP says:

As a longtime WWE vhs/dvd collector, I am proud to say I have not purchased any John Cena themed dvd, and I will also not purchase this waste of disc space

  14. Nick says:

Out of the 10 rivalries off the to of my head they could have chosen with in house talent (that doesn’t involve Hart or HBK) are Rock/Foley, Austin/Rock, Austin/McMahon, Undertaker/Kane, Foley/Taker, Flair/Steamboat, Flair/Dusty, Piper/McMahon, or even Trish/Lita, Cena/Edge although my personal desire is McMahon/Heyman but instead they go with Rock/Cena who had 45 promos which only 4 had both in with more than 1 person in the ring and one really shitty match. I will not be buying this one

  15. Alright eveyone, take a deep breath. Are we all calmed down now? Good, good.
First things first, and I say this as a die-hard John Cena fan, I couldn’t disagree with you guys more about the quality of the WrestleMania match. I thought it was great, and the crowd went ape-poop.
Secondly, I actually thought that Cena-Rock would make a great Rivalry DVD option, though I thought they’d wait a while. As it pertains to most of those other rivalries you guys mentioned, almost all of them were storyline related, so there wouldn’t be a whole lot to talk about beyond straight up analysis (With a couple of exceptions, like HBK-Y2J.) If Austin-McMahon had one, I’m worried it could become like the Chris Farley Show sketch on SNL (“Hey, remember that time when you filled up Vince’s car with concrete? Tha-that was awesome.”)

With Cena and Rock, there really is a tremendous amount of questions to dive into, espescially because, just like Bret and Shawn, everyone knows that there was legitimate hatred between those two. So how much was there?

Having a match, an all-time match nontheless, advertised one year out. When was that decided, and how did it affect each man’s psyche? How about, with Rock being gone for large amounts of time, the previously unseen hyping of a match by using social media? How did Rock manage to train while constantly filming movies?

How about the fact that it led to what was both expected to be, and ended up being, the highest-selling professional wrestling event of all time: Did that add any more pressure to either man? Did Rock get in trouble for using content that wasn’t PG? Did Cena for saying “Miami-Fried Chicken Sh*t”? What was the reaction to Cena calling out Rock’s wrist notes?

Even preceding that, what was Rock’s role expected to be when he finally came back? Was the decision to hold WrestleMania 28 in Miami done with the possibility of this match in mind? Along those same lines, was the ending of the main event of WrestleMania 27 done with the knowledge that this match would take place? Hell, I haven’t MENTIONED their match at Survivor Series, which was Rock’s first match in 7 1/2 years!

There are so many little bits and pieces that would make a Cena-Rock sitdown so intriguing, that I’d love to see it. Even if it’s a rehash of the OIAL Special, I’m fine with that (And for those asking why it wasn’t on ths Blu-Ray, it’s because the music rights were too costly.) I think a sitdown with the two could be nothing short of fantastic.

StopSneetchin is right. I was in Sun Life Stadium that night Cena and Rock fought and I totally took an ape poop.

    • Anonymous says:

LMAO to the guy who complained none of the newest DVD’s have been exciting and then complained we haven’t gotten a set on Goldust.

  16. Anonymous says:

this year in general, kind of sucked/sucks on the dvd releases….

  17. Anonymous says:

A horrible feud, that will make for a horrible dvd.

  18. NickP says:

The most overrated rivalry in WWE history

  19. NickP says:

This dvd, much like the rivalry will suck

  20. ratedrpoed says:

BS, why not do a proper one like rock/austin?

  21. JT says:

There’s way better choices to do rivalry DVDs about. SCSA/Vince, Triple H/The Rock, The Rock/SCSA, John Cena/Edge, Undertaker/Kane, etc.. Why do one on a feud that had weak promos and a disappointing WrestleMania match? Even the Survivor Series match was disappointing.

    • Dave says:

There was a Austin vs McMchon DVD and the feud has been discussed in other DVDs.

It was Austin and Rock were good friends backstage so watching 2 hrs of them kissing each others ass would be boring.

Rock and Cena have legitimate heat after Rock left in 2004. Would be pretty cool if they had a sit down interview with both.

Rock vs HHH would be pretty good too considering both had beef during in the 90s when rock started and hhh being hbks buddy caused some rift, but both are professional enough to work with each other.

    Stupid

  23. Harry Faversham says:

    Puke-a-mania is running wild!

  24. Anonymous says:

They need to release a rivalrie set about hhh and the undertaker

  25. Geolink says:

Wow what a cheap cash in. They could of just included it in on the Blu-ray. I have the original airing that I recorded from USA.

  26. indyfan says:

HAHAHAAHHAHAAHAHAHA what a lame ass set!!!

  27. Vincenzzzzzo says:

I’m actually pretty excited for this. I can go for a blu ray that chronicals their fued. I was bummed their “Once In a Lifetime” special wasn’t included as an extra on WM28. Hopefully it comes on this, per the releases title. Not bad. Looking forward to more details.

  28. BR says:

    No thanks.

  29. nightmare says:

This one makes no sense because all they had was the one time at WM if your going to do one how about one with Stone Cold and Vince or one with Shane and Vince .This Cena and the Rock is just not needed .I felt the match at WM was boring to be honest in fact I feel asleep watching it .

  30. Roaster says:

For the love of God no. Their never before never again tag team match was boring as hell and the WM28 match was boring as well. I could see why this would get released because it has potential to sell well but I hope this isn’t part of the Greatest Rivalries series and they still release one and this crap isn’t replacing it.

  31. Dave says:

I thought the Greatest Rivalries Bret vs Shawn set sold well…but does sound interesting, especially if they have an extended cut of the special.

As for other extras, the Survivor Series 2011 and Wrestlemania 28 matches are a given and all the promo segments like the Rock concert and Cena rap.

    • Vincenzzzzzo says:

I also hope they include every interview done between Rock and Cena. There was one particular interview Cena did on RAW that was great, but wasn’t on the WM28 set. I’d really like to see that interview on this new set. I forgot what RAW that was though…

  32. SRB says:

I actually like this. I had said it before, no rivalry in WWE was greater than HBK/Hart because it was in-ring and in real life. The story and the arguments were always greatly portrayed and it was beyond great. To do another one, no matter who it is would certainly fail to capture anything even close to HBK/Hart. HHH/HBK might come close, but I doubt it. They should releae Cena/rock for sure but on a smaller scale like a 1 or 2 disc piece.

    • T says:

WWE puts out small unimportant releases at the moment that are no sooo exiting. Who needs this set or the Finishing Moves? There is still no Goldust set, Attitude Era set, Christian set and so on…
